Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A sudden tree or standing stone

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

(The native Philly guy we had with us last time was aghast: "You put salsa on your breakfast???!!!")

LOL! But of course! Salsa goes with just about everything!

Some people have such rigid rules about what equates breakfast or dinner, and never the twain shall meet. Silly, IMO.

After all this, I think you need something with a Diesel Van, or Van Diesel, or Vin Diesel, whatever that guy's name is, in it.

I'm thankful I don't drink or smoke. Given the power sugar has over me, I shudder to think what other substances could do.

I've got a safe foods list, too. I'd been using a fabulous really, really, really raw and unfiltered honey to get my sweet fix. Then Feb came along, lost my Dad, started eating convenience foods because of the stress, and *bam*, I'm back in the sugar pit. Very frustrating.

Wife and I have been talking about doing Atkins together. I can keep up with the diet I was on last year, cause I know the routine. But I told her if she'd do the planning, I'll go along.

'Course Atkins does make me a bit Elrondish...

Hi 2J!!!

I'm VEY proud of you for sticking to your diet. Heaven knows I have failed every time I've tried. Too much junk in the house, even if I don't buy it. *sigh*

'zactly. It's an addiction. I have to get rid of sweets completely to shake it. Can't even do the "sugar-free" stuff.

It's like tellin' an alcholic it's okay to have Lite Beer...

I'm lucky...it's not the sweets that get me, it's the bready stuff...and popcorn...God help me, I love the stuff. I'll eat it again, I tell ya!

Just not now.

As far as the Elrondishness...might I recommend flaxseed meal? Oh my stars, the stuff is delicious and being high fiber is beside the point to me! LOL I eat it every evening as a snack.

Put 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal in a bowl. Add hot water enough to cover it all well...stir in one tablespoon of heavy cream and one tablespoon of sugar-free syrup (I use Atkins vanilla syrup). 1.2 net carbs for the whole thing.

Do this every evening and by morning you'll be as giddy as Tom Bombadil!

I'm with 2J on the flaxseed thing...but I didn't like it as a cereal as she mentioned. I think I did it wrong, 'cause though it tasted good, it looked and had the texture of a big bowl of brown snot. Ulch...

But I'm willing to try again. And I DO like the other flax recipes I've tried.

But you can't do the flaxseed on the induction can you?

the least I can do for a soon-to-be Austin resident!

It's not David (aforementioned soon to be Austin resident), it's Joseph, our youngest. Turns out, it may not be Sasser, after all, but OT sent me a patch for that one.(Thanks, OT!)

He had said he was going to stay with a friend for a couple of weeks while he's looking for a place, but I think he'll prolly start looking before then, or at least he SHOULD! We may be contacting you over the summer to find out if available places are in areas of town with good public transportation, etc.

I know what you mean. There are alcoholics in my family, though not in my immediate family...considering how I react to some foods, I'm a bit scared to think of how I'd handle SERIOUS addictions.

But honey works for you? Hm...I might have to try a few recipes I have with whole grains and honey and see how they affect me. Might work...especially as at this point it doesn't take much sweetener to make stuff sweet enough for my taste.

Yes, you can...2-3 tablespoons a day...

I'll try to find where I read it...somewhere on the Atkins webpage...

Actually I believe you can. Certainly on South Beach, but on Atkins as well...it's very low in net carbs. 2J knows the exact numbers. Most of the carbs are fiber, which doesn't count.

Are you doing Atkins?

I was last summer and fall, but not so much any more. It did change the way I think about food, though. So I (mostly) don't eat white bread, white rice, pasta, or sugar.

Hair and I didn't like the "Low-Carb" breads they had at the grocery store, so I just go with a regular whole-grain bread with lots of nuts and seeds in it. And I avoid sugar as much as possible... use a creamer made with Splenda in my coffee, for example.

So we try to focus more on whole foods... meat, eggs, fresh fruit and veggies. We do lots of salads.

My main weakness is tortilla chips - gotta have my chips and salsa!

I know I read it somewhere else other than this, but here's some good info:

http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/viewtopic.php?t=20019

I post on this board, so I'll ask around...

And Rosie's right...it does look a bit like brown snot! LOL But it's all those healthy fatty acids that make it look like that and it's a lubricant for your body! Put plenty of water and the cream should make it a bit more appetizing to look at...

We saw another good Cate Blanchett movie last week, The Missing. See if you can find it. She's a single mother out west and her long estranged father (Tommy Lee Jones) shows up. She doesn't want anything to do with him until her older daughter is kidnapped, then she gets him to help her look for her daughter. We really enjoyed it!
