How many out there use their real names here? (vanity)

Posted on 03/24/2004 5:30:06 AM PST by Peter J. Huss

Just wondering. I switched a little while back, mainly because I didn't see why I should hide behind a fake name.

When I started using my real name, I was a wee bit more careful about what I posted.

Anyone care to chime in on this? Am I being foolhardy?

Have another coffee, that's James Robertson- not Ralph!

Another good reason not to use your real name- internet errors are forever LOL!

You're right. I cut and pasted the name in google, but didn't notice other names were popping up. More coffee-that's it.

May I ask why you are trying to shame people into divulging their names? You have been with us since Mar 3, 2004 I have not shamed anyone, Ms. Becky Johnson of 12412 Cyprus Ave., Freepersville, KY. 49212 +1 (929.332.1515)!. A lot of people have sent me freepermail, thinking they have my actual address (it's been the same 7 years running). Some correctly guessed previous addresses, but the closest was my last address while I was a student at U of M in 1990! That's 14 years old. I removed my name from most 'people searches' a few years back.

Or may not like us wasting time.

My screen name is something I type all the time:

DBrow(15:17);DBcol(20:21);invert(DB)
Output: DB

No, my real name is Aunt Muggs, at least that's what my nieces and nephews think it is.

I was considering not using my real name anymore and wanted others input, which I have got.

I have been privately mailed by people imploring me to not to use my real name.

So, this is my last post as Peter J. Huss, millionaire. I own a mansion and a yacht. (obscure Bugs Bunny reference)

Skittish employer dittos. I've worked on the Hill, worked for a major name-brand Republican organization, and worked for clients who don't want any confusions about message.

None have objected to anonymous freeping (in moderation), but all have had Designated Official Spokesmen, and the rest of us are supposed to have the sense to stay out of the way and not muddy the message.

I use a persistant pseudonym. I've been using varations of 'zeugma' for over a decade now in various online forums. The Cypherpunks mailing list has had some interesting discussions about how one goes about building an anonymous identity that is persistant and can accrue "reputation capital". There are several folks who have posted to the list (which I've subscribed to off and on for ages) for years under a given pseudonym, and sign their messages with PGP/GPG so that it can be easily verified that the message, which may well have been passed through several anonymous remailers to obscure the sender's real identity, is the real "black unicorn" or "lucky green". If someone else attempts to impersonate the pseudonym, it can be either difficult or easy to prove, depending upon whether or not the message was signed digitally.

Personally, I'd like to see more use of this kind of technology, but I see little hope of people ever realizing the benefits that public key cryptography will give them (for instance solving the problem of spam) because too many people think that just because you encrypt something, you have something to hide.

Unfortunately I think some in the government think this as well. Many don't like the thought of us having access to encryption technology.

Well...

You can call me R.
You can call me J.
You can call me R.J.
You can call me Ray Jay
But You DON'T have to call me MR. Johnson.

No, that not my name, I just used to like that guy's 'schtick'. (wonder if he's still doing comedy?)

I do, but I've actually been considering going to a pseudonym. This is the only board I use my real name on. Everywhere else I try to use the name 'wingnutx'.

Gun nuts from thehighroad.org may recognize that :)
