How many out there use their real names here? (vanity)

Posted on 03/24/2004 5:30:06 AM PST by Peter J. Huss

Just wondering. I switched a little while back, mainly because I didn't see why I should hide behind a fake name.

When I started using my real name, I was a wee bit more careful about what I posted.

Anyone care to chime in on this? Am I being foolhardy?

I'd like to hear from some Freeper IT wizards about how hard it would be for hostile governments (including domestic 'Rat) and other organizations to track each and every one of us down.

You have a spot on your shirt... or it could be something on the lens of my binoculars. :)

I will share my real identity on a case-by-case basis via private mail, but the main reason I don't do it outright is because there are too many nut cases who may monitor this forum (I'm talking about the lurking trolls).

Are you related to Stands-with-a-Fist??

No. If so, did Dances-with-Wolves and Ms. Fist ever have any kids? What did they name them??

In the movie, the two "white" Sioux Indians escaped just prior to the US Calvary's arrival. They travelled south and west, bought some land in a rural area and had three daughters, Rumer, Scout and Tallulah...:-)

I'd say "You're kidding!" except I know you're not. Care to share the details?

I use my real name, I figure I'm more legitimate that way and no one can accuse me of being a troll! Besides this has been a great learning process for me as I've learned to debate and take heat when my reasoning process has been flawed. If your gonna have an opinion at least stand by it the way John Hancock did when he signed the Declaration of Independence with bold cheeky matter of factness...and do eat humble pie occaisionally when one is wrong or found to be out of ones depth!

"Types, aren't you worried some wacko might find a way to steal your identity or something?"

I would have said "Let them have it, I am tired of it and it is no good anymore. Time for a new one." Hmmmmm, I think I would like to have James Bond's identity. Lots of women, fun toys, lots of travel and lots of action.

My Freepname is a statement of my beliefs. (Go to my page to see where it comes from.)

When I first started on FR, it was right after the Clinton administration was in office, and I was working on a government contract. A contract employee can be terminated by the contractor at the pleasure of the government. (At least one person from my office was fired because he went mano-a-mano with a US senator on a public forum.)

Additionally, there are nutcases and stalkers that can make your life miserable if they know where you live.

I now work for a major aerospace contractor that *hates* adverse publicity about its employees. So again, having a freepname saves them from potential embarrassment, and me from looking for another job.

My two cents.

My husband and I tried to understand, but he did actually send death threats. More than one. It got to the point of scary. He got back into Free Republic and posted a comment on this thread. He is a very smart man. Crazy yes, dumb no. That's what scared me.

I'd never use my own name here.

It's uncommon enough that that someone could find me quite easily using a Google search.
Just for the heck of it, I tried it and only got 68 hits.

Besides, "Constitution Day" would be a funny name to have to explain to people.

It depends on who you are and what you do.

What I do ... well, my daughter calls me a "Ho" but my career would suffer if I were known to be a political activist even in such a simple thing as posting on Free Republic. (that, of course, would be the case if I were a leftwing activist.)

Yes...:-) My wife and I often joke that it might be nice to have someone steal our identity. That way, we can have a clean start on things, by being someone else. Ditto on James Bond!
