The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Ah, OK. There ARE some appalachian fiddle tunes with mighty odd names. "Shove That Pig's Foot Further in the Bed", for one.

How about "Dirty, me. Dirty me. I'm Disgusted with Myself?"

I just wish the stories behind these names weren't mostly lost! Gotta be some very interesting ones.

Argh! I meant to bring up Denethor in my post as well. I thought he was also a lesser man in the movie.

I'll try to go into this in more depth tomorrow. Time for me to hit the hay for tonight.

How high does the tide usually get? Is it to the first or second line of stones, or is there usually a beach? Very impressive and absolutely better than concrete.

The high tide is normally going to be up to about the top of the first course of stones. Certain very high tides, only a few times a year, will be another couple of feet higher. The "mean higher high" as it were... that'll be about halfway up the bulkhead or a little more.

The total tidal range runs about 16 feet from extreme to extreme. The lowest low tide is about -3.5ft and the highest high tide is about 12.5 to 13ft. Most days are not that extreme and run about 10 to 12ft total range.

But I can confirm that the time, and the tide, does in fact wait for no man. I've tested this.

I hope PJ redeems Denethor somewhat in the extended edition. In the movie, he's a nutball. In the book, he's been playing mind games with Sauron, and feeding his own ego. His weaknesses did him in, despite his original intention to wisely rule Gondor until the return of the king. His pride failed him, as it did for Boromir. Boromir got a chance to redeem himself, and took it. Denethor didn't.

Great trip, thanks.

After so many years in Miami, I find it unbelievably exotic to visit a place with such a wintry climate. My daughter and I have a really nice time together.

We were driving around way out in the country, looking for a wind farm, all the fields were covered in deep snow, it was snowing, very windy and very cold, but really beautiful, the snow was blowing all around like spray.

One lady that we met out there wanted to know why in the world a Miamian was up there. I just told her I needed a break from all that warm weather.

...and rightfully so. I can't imagine how you can take it... all that icky sunshine and warm weather. You're made of tougher stuff than I. :-)

> You may find this old thread interesting... it includes one of the discussions of movie Faramir vs. book Faramir.

Thanks--just got done reading it--quite interesting, yes! The part about Tolkien identifying with Faramir and conceived him as a combination of scholar and warrior sheds a lot of light on the character.

Okay--have a good night! Think I'll review the Boromir/Faramir/Denethor passages tonight so I can keep up better tomorrow! :)

Me, too! I'm also looking forward to seeing the Scouring of the Shire.

Good points! That's pretty much how I saw Denethor the last time I read it, too: his pride led him to take on Sauron alone, and he wouldn't listen to anyone's else's counsel, which was his downfall; but he started off with the good intentions that paved his road to ruin--as did Boromir.

I know I get tired of it!

Welcome back, Sam! Glad to hear you had a good trip.

I love Miami.

But strangely, after living here 30 years, I am really starting to miss winter, and especially fall.

My daughter thinks one winter up north would cure me of that, but I'm not so sure. I find winter time to be beautiful and poetic.

Of course central VA, where I grew up, while it has a real winter, has much less of one than upstate New York.

Look at these turbines, which we found in the snow, on the windy day. The looked ghostly then, in the grey sky, not like they do in the picture below. They are something like 350 feet tall, the diameter of the screws are 250 feet, about.

Yes, great trip, thanks.

It's funny, I love July in Miami as well.

Anyhow, I am exhausted, gonna hit the sack.

That'll be strange, not having to sleep under a couple blankets tonight!

Good night, All.

Funny now how wind power is now *hated* by environmentalists because it kills a few birds. A couple of birds a year get whacked by the windmills and now it is among the environmentally *unfriendly* technologies, after spinning it for years as the answer to all of our problems. Dang, I wish they could make up their minds.

Next thing you now... they'll be pushing for nuclear power.

Unfortunately, that will not happen. It was not scripted or filmed.
