The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Doesn't work with ours, though, because it remembers the last four or five passwords...and they have different intervals when it comes to forced changes.

We're working on making the system more integrated, but then people complain about change. *sigh* No satisfyin' 'em, I'm tellin' ya!

Hehehe...I had just changed the password to Lotus Notes just before Entmoot (they made me!) and I couldn't remember the new one when I got back...remembered the old one though.

My last job, the IT guys were so paranoid, that we had to jump thru hoops.

Mandatory password change every 30 days. Minimum of 7 characters. Case sensitive, with a combination of upper and lower case required. One of the characters had to be a numeral. YEESH

It's also VERY STOOPID. You get everyone writing down a list of passwords, that get reused every 6 to 9 changes, just so they can remember them. DUMB

Sounds like a fairly standard policy, though 30 days is pretty extreme. We do 90 days, though don't force changes for students...they have such restricted access anyway it isn't as big of a deal.

We encourage the mix of upper and lower and numbers, but don't enforce it for network passwords. It IS enforced for the grade and transcript access system.

Hehehe....and then we have the deal where you have to log on to the network to run the mass spec. So right now we're always logged on into a "real" person's account. Hmmmm....what kind of mischief can I do?

See above. For grades, I can see. For average coparate stuff it's stoopid.

Hey all... well, here I sit once again freeping from an areoport. How did we ever get along without wireless internet access?

[sip] Well... it's a good thing they don't make *me* fly the plane.

It would appear that the new bulkhead is going to arrive this afternoon at about 3pm. I just *knew* this would happen while I'm out of town. dangit. I'll have to keep up with pictures in email.

And I have to miss it tonight too.... supposed to visit with Kay tonight.... She had foot surgery and Bob has been nursing her for three days.... He has somewhere else to be tonight, and I think she wants a change of nursemaids anyhow....

Bring down Seabiscuit to watch with her.

The client site where I work three days a week makes us change passwords every 90 days, and it has to be at least eight characters long. I rarely shut the computer off there, so it might be hard to remember... I'll tell you, the temptation to just use "newpass1", "newpass2", "newpass3" is really hard to fight.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I remember a similar set of thoughts though when my and hair's mom passed away some years ago. The way she went was mercifully quick when compared to how it might have been.

You're very right about that. Too many companies think it improves security to require complex and long passwords and frequent changes without duplicates. All it really does is make people write their password down, and most of them do it by putting a sticky-note up under the keyboard.

ROFL I hadn't thought of under the keyboard. Mine's under my chair. It's safer that way.

LOL. The only time I log out is when I reboot the computer.

Yeah, me either.

The under-chair idea is good as long as no one steals your chair!

Okay, so I'll admit this. I have my padlock for the gym locker on my gym bag. Actually now I have two because in the interim when I was not being fitness dwarf, I forgot the combination for the old one.

Remembered to put the new one somewhere where I wouldn't forget...but I don't remember where that was...but at least I still remember that combination.

Yet another reason to invest in a good pair of bolt cutters.

I can still remember the combination of the combo lock I got for my tenth birthday. Of course, that's probably because I knew darn well that if I ever locked it somewhere it didn't belong and didn't remember how to open it, my Dad would have killed me.

I haven't been so lucky when it comes to remembering numbers since then.

I should get them to give me that lock...it's still out at the house, but I think I'm the only one who knows how to open it.
