I was the same way about liver. My family all loved liver and I would gag at one bite. Just couldn't eat it. My mom once made me sit at table until I ate it. I was there well after dark, and bedtime. Couldn't do it. I never made my kids eat anything. I would nudge them sometimes, but not force. My son's problem isn't with veggies, he eats them ok. He can't take gravies, especially white ones. Or anything else white and moogy, like mashed potatoes, or oatmeal.

The way I deal with it is - if they don't eat the good for you stuff, they don't get desert. (how can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat)

Was the same way with canned spinach and with cooked squash. I still don't like squash that much, but it isn't anathema anymore.

I"m not g'nad, and I don't even play him on TV ;o), but here's a pot-roast seasoning suggestion. I use McCormick brand Montreal Steak Seasoning. Some of the ingredients are Coarse Salt, Black Pepper, Dill and Coriander Seed, Red Pepper, Garlic and Paprika. It is VEY good!

Dredge the roast in flour mixed with a tablespoon of the seasoning, then brown it on all sides in the big pan you're going to use for cooking. When it's browned, add some water to cook it in (put a little more seasoning in the water), then put the lid on it and put it on a very low heat for several hours! It will be yummy!

mornin'!

how was your evenin at home? Elf-boy is trippin' over the selection of 'toons this am. He thinks he is in Heaven. I got the card reader installed on mom's 'puter. She had to take a friend to work this mornin, so I am on my own til she gets back. Should be back at any minute.

Ugh! Mom has ~got~ to do something about her thermostat. She asked me to turn it up last night cuz she had turned it down. I put it on about 65 degrees thinking I had picked a good temp so as not to freeze anyone, but not too hot either. She got up in the middle of the night and turned it back down to 60. She was too hot. Then, I must have gotten up not too long after and done the same thing. Only I turned it down all the way. I was getting nosebleeds. There is absolutely NO WAY the temp was 60 or even 65 degrees. It was more like 80. Hmm, I'm thinkin mother's day present??

My grandmother used to cook fresh butter beans whenever we would go to her house. My daddy and I absolutely loved em.

I am not as crazy about the canned version though.

I'm thinking (and have been correct so far) that if I just don't make a big deal out of Matthew idiosyncrasies, he'll grow out of them. I used to have to hold him all the time when he was a baby, because the sound of the a/c or heat kicking on and off would just freak him out. Or someone walking across the floor. Well, I just scowled at anyone who critizised me, but I held him all the time till guess what? He grew out of it.

For a LONG time, I couldn't vacuum with him around...very traumatizing to him. Steve would have to take him outside for me to vacuum. He grew out of that too. (At the same age, around 18 months, we heard him pick the violin out of some classical music I was listening to and mimic it note for note. My mom was with me and we both realized that he must have some exceptional hearing or something.)

For the longest time, he just ate meat, milk and rice. I supplemented with OJ and multivitamins. Now he eats things like gravy, cous cous, spoon bread, corn bread and the like. And he's always like pumpkin pie.

I'm a nurse...I know what the norms are supposed to be and it took me a few weeks to realize that Matthew wasn't the norm. In that time, he went from 6lb 12oz to a little over 4lbs. He was just one freakin' out little baby till in desperation I picked him up and held him all the time. By the time he was four months old, he was bright and confident. What would he have been if I'd ignored his need?

He read his first words shortly before turning 3. He was in first grade at age 4. He was never the norm, not in anything...and that included his diet.

Joshua, on the other hand, is the epitome of normalacy...PRAISE GOD! LOL

My mom wouldn't let me down from the table till I ate my helpin' of canned peas.

I always heard you should make you kids eat their veggies. When Paul, our first, was about 3 1/2, we had carrots for supper. He kep fiddling around and didn't eat them. He and I sat there for almost an hour until he finished them. He promply threw them up all over the table. Porrl little thing, I felt SO bad! Since then, I put the veggies on their plates, but NEVER forced them to eat them. We make sure they take a vitamin each day, and I figure when they're grown they may try some of the things they never liked before. Heck, I was adult before I ever ate cabbage, broccoli, or cantaloupe again, now I love em!

I don't have that seasoning and can't count on it being at the store...but I have most of the ingredients. That's a good start - thanks!

I did brown it with a little flour before and cook it like that...it was vey good, and tender. This time I want to use a bit more seasoning. Only think I don't have is the coriander...but that IS something I could get...or substitute something else that smells right!

When I was little, I hated oatmeal and bananas...'cause they were sometimes slimy, and I HATED anything with that texture. I like both now. If I had been forced, I imagine I would have been much less likely to try 'em again!

I just make it, put it on his plate, (granted, not usually very much...just a spoonful) and then toss it in the trash when he's done.

That sounds like a "No Thank You" portion.
