The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

That's a cool phone! Does your plan have free long distance? We've gotten to where we don't make long distance calls from our home phone anymore. We always use the cell phone, and we wait until 9pm here cause we have free nights and weekends, too.

Oh....anything that doesn't look like a box or like every other house on the street. There was another house on 5 acres that looked like a barn and "needs some TLC" that was within acceptable commuting distance.

I usually click on the Victorians...but they're either teeny tiny or big. 'Course if I had to choose, I'd take big but that means more housework and I'm just not the Flylady type.

I am reminded of a girl that I was her "secret sister" in church. She didn't know who I was, but I would have things like candy and pizza delivered to the school where she went to high school. It tickled her to death, people noticed and were interested in why she got the items and she had things to share with others.

Now I think about this when I send items to a soldier. Something to satisfy them physically (food, knife), and emotionally, (a nice encouraging letter). But I also want to have others notice the guy...set the guy apart for just a bit.

I think it must be some basic human desire to give. We give the care packages, the soldier gives away the moonpies and candy and in the process gets a little extra attention and (can I say fondness or would cameraderie be a better word) from his friends.

I think of these things when I make up a package...how far on several levels will this package affect the soldier and those around him.

Does any of this make a lick of sense?

Oh, we got Wallace and Grommit.

The guys (all three) just loved it. Hated to return it!

Hey, girl! How's the studying going? I would think those certification tests would be a piece of cake for you!

Oh, it makes perfect sense! It always makes us feel good when we can share something of ours with someone else. How much greater that must feel when you're so far from home!

Did you get all of the movies, or just one of 'em?

Sigh...I wish it wasn't Sunday evening. I'm not ready to go back to work.

I"m glad they liked it. We need to buy those DVDs. I'm gonna check half.com to see if anyone is selling them used.

We are getting the Jeeves and Wooster DVDs from Netflix. It was a TV series on the BBC back in the 70's. They are based on the stories by P. G. Wodehouse. I've never read the stories, but the shows are hilarious! They're about a young man (Bertie Wooster), a member of the 'idle rich' class in England between the world wars and his new 'valet', Jeeves, who is the smarter of the two men.

You should locate some of the books - much of the humor in them is verbal, and in the narration rather than the dialog. They're a hoot! The shows are good, too...but as usual pale in comparison to the original stories.

It was one DVD, with three different movies on it. Steve really liked them!

Unlike the Journey of Natty Gann, where in the first few minutes it had the Gee-Dee word, despite it was Rated G.

Yes, it was a Disney movie...

Seconding the "read the books!" suggestion. Wodehouse has a really dry wit that just comes out brilliantly on the written page.

Rosie, the book I recommended to you last night, "To Say Nothing of the Dog" has some Wodehousian flavor...

This morning, I found the toy rabbit that my cat used to sleep with EVERY night, from kittenhood. I haven't even seen it in at least three years, possibly four.

He immediately remembered it. I threw it at him, just like I used to. He jumped up in mid-air, caught it, and proceeded to "kill" it with fervor. He has MISSED his rabbit! LOL!

I think the ratings on older movies tend to be lower than ones on newer ones, for some reason.

The other thing is that they have their own rules for ratings...like for example, my family once rented "Songcatcher", not knowing much about it. It's a PG-13 movie, so we weren't letting the littlest watch it, but it just said rated for "thematic elements", as I recall - nothing else.

A few minutes into it, the main character walks in on her sister and her sister's lesbian lover as they're preparing to...you know. My Dad about hit the roof.

Natty Gann actually isn't that bad of a movie...if they coulda left that out.
