Poetry and Potpourri ....November 17-18, 2003

.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

I'm sorry, I just noticed that my follow up message to my abortion related post did not, apparently, post. It said that I inadvertantly posted my comments to the wrong thread. I hope you didn't find my post too much of a non-sequitor- it was supposed to be somewhere else.

BTW: I like the poetry.

Thank you for the delicious coffee and also for remembering us with your inspirational posts each day.

How could I forget, after all this is my favorite poetry thread.

Evening all!

Ariel the Abyssinia

For almost eleven years
he was my dear and dignified companion;
in motion he was as elegantly lithe
as Baryshnikov's leaps;
even stretched lazily on the rug,
he was as graceful as a sailboat skimming before the wind;
not for him Rosie the calico's trusting belly-up pose!
He moved within his pelt like steel springs
wrapped in velvet;
pale golden eyes and golden brown coat;
each individual hair stippled cream and apricot and black.
Within the small confines of the fenced backyard
he was Emperor,
and woe betide that heedless feline who dared
to place a paw within his realm!
He gave no ground to beast or man
(leaving, I confess, some doubt as to his judgment);
he greeted the visiting Mastiff with complete aplomb,
showing only a mild interest in her size.
He was not a cuddly cat,
scorning laps and close proximity;
rather, accepting as his due a certain respectful affection.
Nor did he hesitate to demand his rights
by thrusting his sleek smooth head
against cheek or palm, commanding caresses,
in all matters
ever the perfect gentleman.

Good Evening, Victoria

That is a very cute feline joke. That cat sounds like several that have lived on our farm. Independent ..... but friendly when they were in a playful mood.
Thank you for finding it for us.

Rusty Spurs

There’s a pair of spurs hanging on a nail out in the shed
The straps are dry and cracking and the metal’s rusty red
My father gave them to me when he taught me how to ride
And well do I remember how I strapped them on with pride

Those spurs bring back the memories of the days of long ago
To the times of droving cattle, where the western rivers flow
My thoughts go back to riding night watch, with the stars shinning bright
As I ride around the cattle singing just beyond the fire light

We lived for months away from home out on the great stock route
As we walked the cattle slowly in from the stations further out
Days were long and life was hard, but the saddle was our throne
For we were Kings of our domain and answered to ourselves alone

But we didn’t feel the winds of change blowing out our way so fast
Soon the drover and his plant would be a memory from the past
For contractors with there big machines were building roads of tar
As they pushed there way across the plains they made a vivid scar

Now the trucks, in the wet or dry, could tackle those outback roads
By night and day they rattled out to pick up the bovine loads
Yes the drover’s days were numbered as the trucks came out our way
As the trip that took us months to do, they now could travel in a day

Although we tried to struggle on, the trucks were here to stay
In the end, like other drovers, I had to give the game away
So I sold my plant and horses for anything I could
Caught a train that headed south and left the droving life for good

I’ve settled down in town and hung those spurs up in the shed
And now I wear a miner’s lamp, working underground instead
But at times when I see those spurs, my mind goes drifting back
To the days of droving cattle out on the Wave Hill Track.

We had fog this morning but the sun has finally broken through; it will probably be a very nice day. I think the weather is suppose to change for the week-end; may start to see some more winter like weather. That means I had better put frames up so I can cover my avocado trees. They are still young and I don't think they can take very heavy frost.

Why don't you come over to the new thread? I know, you enjoy these time warp episodes! LOL

You do have to admit, it is fun to wander back a day and look at it fresh from a different light.

Yess ... it is fun to wander back. Sometimes I go back a few days just to re-read something that I may not have spent enough time on the first time around. Sometimes, I return just because some threads seem like everyone was having fun and I enjoy seeing them again.

Sometimes I reread something I wrote and wonder: "Where the heck did that come from? It sounds WAAaaaay too lucid and well thought out to be me."

LOL

I need to leave for awhile.

Need to take my great-niece in for a vaccination. Oh ... how I hate that. We'll go to the drive through car wash afterwards. She thinks that is a carnival ride. LOL It is easy to entertain 4 year olds.
