.................................................................
The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.
FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.
I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Good Morning, Meekie and Carl!!
Even tho it is a little warmer today, please keep the refills coming. We had some light showers early this morning. Just enough to make the morning commute tricky for some and some electric transformer problems for others.

Thanks ... sure glad I wasn't born on November 3rd; I'd hate to watch who I spent time with today.

Carl will keep 'em coming ! I noticed today that in The Dallas Morning News
our weather is supposed to turn 'normal' this week too ...

Fall weather is finally on the way
12:26 PM CST on Monday, November 3, 2003
From Staff Reports
North Texas soon will start to feel a lot more like Thanksgiving rather than the Fourth of July.
Fall is on the way with forecasts promising cool, crisp days and chilly nights that should put an end to a long, hot summer whose unusual pattern had the heat arriving in spurts.
July and August brought the hottest days while June and September were unseasonably cool. However, warm weather lingered surprisingly at the end of October, said Steve Fano, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
October usually starts with high temperatures in the 80s, dropping to the 70s by the end of the month. This year, the opposite occurred, Fano said.
A warm, moist weather pattern from the Gulf kept the cooler weather southwest of the Dallas area, he said.
Temperatures reached the triple-digit mark 19 times this summer. The annual average is 15 days. Summer 2003 also broke a 51-year record on Aug. 6 when the mercury hit 109 degrees.
The weather should become more seasonable this week with a cold front expected to push through the region by Wednesday or Thursday, dropping highs to the 60s and lows in the 50s on Thursday through Sunday. The forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of rain Friday.
Its definitely going to feel like fall, Fano said. Colder air is moving in this direction.
Mondays high should reach the low 80s with lows in the 60s. Tuesday will warm up to the mid-80s, then cool to the mid-50s overnight. Highs should reach the 70s on Wednesday.

Holy Ghost Canyon
Dawn at the rim of the Canyon
And woodsmoke curling high,
Dew on the wildflowers and grasses,
Rose-tinted clouds in the sky.
Noon and the warm sparkling sunshine,
Air, pine-scented and clean,
Mountain peaks tall and majestic,
Bluest of skies ever seen.
Night and the moon resplendent,
Tracing a clear silhouette
Of pinon, fir and white aspen
And cedar trees black as jet.

You might be a Redneck if:
1. Your standard of living improves when you go camping.
2. Your prenuptial agreement mentions chickens.
3. You have jacked up your home to look for a dog.
4. You have a relative living in your garage. (I wonder if JustFrank counts)
5. Your neighbor has ever asked to borrow a quart of beer.
6. There is a belch on your answering machine greeting.
7. You have rebuilt a carburetor while sitting on the commode.
8. None of the tires on your van are the same size.
9. You hold the hood of your car with your head while you work on it.
10.Your idea of getting lucky is passing the emissions test.
11.Your town put the new garbage truck in the Christmas parade.
12.Your local beauty salon also fixes cars.
13.Your doghouse and your living room have the same shag carpet.
14.You've slow danced in the Waffle House.
15.Starting your car involves popping the hood.
16.Your garbage man is confused about what goes and what stays.
17.You whistle at women in church.
18.You actually wear shoes your dog brought home.
19.You've been in a fist fight at a yard sale.
20.You carry a fly swatter in the front seat of the car so you can reach the kids in the back seat.
21.You think people who have cell phones and e-mail are uppity.

Yep ! Fall is just around the corner for us too ! All summer long, I got into the habit of taking shorts to my workouts in mornings to change into afterward. Then, we had a little bit of a cool spell and I had trouble figuring out what to wear in the mornings (kept taking the shorts instead of jeans). So I finally started taking jeans instead of shorts. Then it got warmer again and jeans were too warm to wear. Please ! Make up your mind, Mother Nature !! lol !

Fall is Here
Helen H. Moore
Fall is here.
Another year
is coming to an end.
Summer's finished,
Summer's gone,
Winter's round the bend.
Fall is piles of crunchy leaves,
orange, gold, and red.
Fall is sweaters with long sleeves
and blankets on the bed.
Fall is footbell,
Fall is pumpkins,
Fall's where summer ends.
And
Fall is coming back to school,
and seeing all my friends.

Quiet Gifts
Summer's heat lingers into Autumn's call
Yet the wind brings a distant smell of rain
Salmon gather seaward, patient for the fall
And seabirds sing their happy songs again
Change has come though silent as a ghost
As shaman knows and feels it in his blood
A fire burns upon the northwest coast
Before the snows, before the torrent flood
This is the time when creatures must abide
By natures call, a seasonal command
It draws the salmon from the salty tide
To journey far unto the hinterland
Just as they did ten thousand years and more
When other men along the river trod
And now it's I who wanders on this shore
surrounded by these quiet gifts of God.

NO MYSTERY
on the coasts
the morning fog ascends
and leans against the mountains
with a silent soft
evergreens like ghosts
upon the mist depends
drinking from their fountains
with thirsty arms aloft
no mystery
it is natures way
the salmon fight the stream to spawn
the acorns fall in measure
it's clear to me
that nature would display
the Creator's hand upon
all that gives me pleasure
