Europe Really Does Fear the Mythical F-35 Fighter ‘Kill-Switch’
National Security Journal ^ | 8/25/2025 | Andrew Latham

Posted on 08/26/2025 5:29:48 AM PDT by whyilovetexas111

Ever since the Europeans signed on to the F-35 program, it has been clouded by one persistent fear: that in some future geopolitical crisis, Washington might seek to exercise leverage by denying software updates or spare parts, thereby rendering the European fleet inoperable.

But where does this geopolitical anxiety come from?

Is it grounded in historical fact (i.e., have there been precedents in which the United States weaponized its control over advanced weapon systems against its allies)?

Why would Europe even want this thing if we could just hold back the spare parts?

I don’t see what system could be in place that doesn’t have a work around with the physical plane.

I mean if its software that can be looked at and changed?

That would require Europeans knowing how to make software. We're no longer in the days of Alan Turing (a British dude) inventing the computer. Europe's software education has fallen way behind the U.S. and Asia.

In almost every case, support for these systems continued uninterrupted, even amid political differences over issues ranging from the Suez Crisis to the Vietnam War to oil policy and beyond.

The writer knew this, so why create this topic when you know at the outset that it's false?

The blowback from Trump shutting down intelligence and other support for Ukraine is that Europe has concluded they must be more independent from the U.S. The F-35 was the first casualty of that. Trump pushed Europe to be more independent, and they are demonstrating that now. It will cost the U.S. in military materiel sales.

This is from Andrew Latham and the National Security Journal. Which means it is garbage and the opposite is true.

Put aside the name calling for a minute and think it through. He literally calls the kill switch mythical in the title. Which means, it does not exist.

In real life, government policy makers do not fear what does not exist. The F-35 kill switch does not exist, therefore there is nothing to fear.

One reason that NATO nations might want an American plane like the F-35 is that not all fighter bombers are rated ‘nuclear capable’. I think some of the French-built stuff is nuclear-capable, but others are not. The US stores a portion of its nuclear deterrent in Germany, Italy & Turkey. NATO airforces are expected to be trained & equipped to deliver those bombs.

It is important to note that the French nuclear arsenal is separate from NATO.

I am sure the Chinese have kill switches in our planes, too, since they supplied parts for it, AND they bugged every router we bought from Cisco.

It’s not silly.

F-35 source code is not included when they are sold to other countries. The code also usually has a custom compiler from the relevant contractor.

And, of course, the source code is classified so a contractor can’t sell it themselves.

The EU is a bigger threat to the U.S. than Russia is.

My employer bought a batch of Cisco switches from a grey market vendor who “unknowingly” sourced them from China. This was tracked down by Cisco who reached out to us and we replaced them. However, the Chinese knockoff ones were our top performers and had the best uptime. ;-)

Yeah, I was employing sarcasm.

Even if they did know how to code, they would still prefer to let England provide them a free livelihood, then actually work. In other words, they are not there to help England improve, they are there to conquer it and take over, and the police & politicians are assisting on that effort because they are either stupid, hate their fellow citizens, or they are so frightened that can think logically.

I think Trump’s policies will enhance military sales to Europe. My take is that they will realize they are going to be more responsible for their own security and will want US made weaponry. The risk of unsubstantiated claims against our aircraft won’t be as bad as the risk of not having it?
