The very first time that I heard California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass say that they were creating a “one stop center” that would make it “easy” for fire victims to get a building permit, I knew they were lying.
These 3 screenshots from their own website prove that they were lying.
This is the link to their website:
https://recovery.lacounty.gov/rebuilding/permitting-progress-dashboard/
This first screenshot is dated June 30, 2025.
These other two screen shots are close ups taken from that first screenshot.
This close up shows that from March 1 through June 30, 2025, more than 5,000 fire victims visited the “one stop center.” I’m assuming that these were more than 5,000 unique fire victims, and none of them went more than once, because it’s called a “one stop center.”
This other close up shows that as of June 30, 2025, 948 fire victims had applied for permits to rebuild their homes.
But out of those 948 requests for permits, only 44 have been approved.
That’s less than 5% of building permit requests that have actually been approved.
And when we take into account that more than 5,000 unique fire victims have visited the “one stop center,” and that only 44 building permits have been approved, that’s actually means that less than 1% of the fire victims who visited the “one stop center” have received permission to rebuild their homes.
Less than 1%.
So the claim by Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass that their “one stop center” would make it “easy” for fire victims to get a building permit was a complete lie.
Of course it’s possible that some fire victims did in fact visit the “one stop center” more than once. But if that is the case, then it only proves that the phrase “one stop center” was a lie.
Anyway, given the huge number of homes that burned down, it’s an absolute disgrace that only 44 building permits have been approved.
Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass were lying when they said it would be “easy” for fire victims to get a building permit.
“reinforced concrete and cinder blocks”
California is subject to earthquakes.
“get downtown LA cleaned up”
The heart of downtown is clean.
East 6th and 7th should charge state park tent fees.
It’s about two months of county processing time to get a full house permit in my Florida county.
For a basic reviewed permit, figure about two weeks.
“...Gavin Newsom is a greasy worm....”
Grusome Newscum represents what the lib white women really love: “greasy and wormy”
One-stop means one thing to the public, and an entirely different thing to the state bureaucrats. “Stop”, is exactly what the state wants.
Adam Carolla called it. Having worked in the construction trades, he’s been up close to the beast.
There is such a thing as earthquake resistant construction.
I think I recall Oprah laughing about investing some dough for a quick flip for profit in Hawaii where the owners there couldn’t afford to rebuild.
“Curse their sudden, but inevitable betrayal!”
My thought precisely ... that’s what this reminds me of ... and from what I’ve heard and read, the devastated areas in Maui remain a long way from being “rebuilt”.
Concrete and cinder blocks could be problematic in a ground moving earthquake
They have not developed the button to request a permit yet. They were busy with all the graphs.
Yes, I guess concrete and cinder blocks will crumble in an earthquake. What type of foundation do they have?
Isn’t it still concrete with rebar in it?
So, how did the house in the Laguna Beach fire survive?
It had over an inch of stucco on the outside.
It did not have soffit vents.
It had metal roofing.
It had concrete walls that came up 3-4’ above grade.
There are ways to build a house/structure to survive a fire.
I’m not an expert.
But yes things need to be done better.
Interesting exercise people can do. Go to Realtor.com and look for lots for sale in Pacific Palisades.
Next look at the lot address on Google street view which will show the house before it burned.
Huge amounts of trees bushes and other vegetation all around those houses.
It’s easy to see what happened when you look like that.
the immortal words of Otter from animal House “you effed up....you trusted us” should be tattooed on every Democrat/liberal at birth.
Fires in arid climates are inevitable.
Southern California is a desert climate. Irrigation makes it habitable.
The Santa Anna winds are not going to ever stop blowing.
This is no different than blaming the Governor of Florida for a hurricane. These weather events have been happening in those places for thousands of years. They only difference is that they were not so densely populated even 200 years ago.
Generally people learn from their mistakes. Chicago burned down. It got rebuilt. They are going to rebuild Lahaina.
They will rebuild Pacific Palisades. It is going to take a long time and it is going to be very expensive.
Some former owners will be forced to sell.
“Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass were lying”
This is news????
Here is the article that goes into details of the exterior construction of the Laguna Beach fir of 1993.
https://www.finehomebuilding.com/1995/06/01/fire-resistant-details
IF the building codes in these parts of California were changed to mimic the construction techniques of this house then any new construction homes would survive these fires. Slowly older houses would get replaced with homes built like this. Just like homes that get destroyed by a storm surge/hurricane get replaced.
This house in the article was from over 30 years prior.
What did they change in the building codes since then?
IF you want to rebuild in a fire prone area then you need to build a FIRE PROOF structure. Maybe you also require ALL new houses to have an in ground pool to be able to draw water from.

Great comment, woodbutcher.
If Los Angeles is beefing up building standards in the area, you’d think we would have heard about that by now.
Yes, building in Florida is straightforward.
