An anti-Trump guest on MSNBC called to cancel President's Day and said that the day is "silly," suggesting the holiday makes the office out to be a king.
"Way Too Early" host on MSNBC Ali Vitali asked presidential historian Lindsay Chervinsky if she wanted to completely "scrap" the holiday, to which Chervinsky responded, "It is a little bit silly. I mean, we have had some real duds, so I'm not sure we really want to be celebrating all presidents."
She added, "And the tradition actually comes from celebrating birthdays, which is a celebration that we inherited from celebrating the king, and I'm just not sure that that's exactly what we want."
The historian, who has said she was disappointed in the 2024 election outcome, added, "I think that we want to have a certain respect for the office. I totally get that. And some have done extraordinary things, but by celebrating all of them, I do think it causes us to think of the President as somehow other, when reality, they are a citizen, just like everyone else."
Chervinsky was then asked about Trump's near-quoting of Napolean Bonaparte on Truth Social where he wrote "He who saves his country does not violate any law," and told Vitali that the post was something that the American people should "push against" and added, "I think if we think of a president, as someone to celebrate, just because they exist, which is what the king was and that's why they celebrated the King's birthday. Then, kind of, it does evolve into that

From the National Archives, George Washington’s Birthday:
https://www.census.gov/newsroom/stories/presidents-day.html
“Washington’s Birthday was celebrated on February 22nd until well into the 20th century. However, in 1968 Congress passed the Monday Holiday Law to ‘provide uniform annual observances of certain legal public holidays on Mondays.’ By creating more 3-day weekends, Congress hoped to ‘bring substantial benefits to both the spiritual and economic life of the Nation.’
“One of the provisions of this act changed the observance of Washington’s Birthday from February 22nd to the third Monday in February. Ironically, this guaranteed that the holiday would never be celebrated on Washington’s actual birthday, as the third Monday in February cannot fall any later than February 21.
“Contrary to popular belief, neither Congress nor the President has ever stipulated that the name of the holiday observed as Washington’s Birthday be changed to ‘President’s Day.’”
“Washington’s birthday (Feb 22) and Lincoln’s birthday (Feb 12) were separate federal holidays when I was in school.”
Yep. They were combined into Presidents Day in order to make room for MLK Day without actually adding another paid holiday.
Everything MLK is totally racist. That huge ugly statue on the Mall is disgusting. It does not belong there.
Leftwing rags sound like the Onion and the Bee.
Thank you. I shall hereafter refer to the holiday as a celebration of the birthday of George Washington. Certainly a worthwhile national holiday in my humble opinion.
Happy birthday to George Washington!
Fredrick Douglas deserves the day.
I agree. I don’t want to commemorate Buchanan, Wilson, FDR, JFK, LBJ, Ford, Carter, the Bushes, Clinton, Obama and Biden.
By getting assassinated. At the time he was shot, his star was starting to fade. A few months earlier at the New Politics Conference, a leftist confab, he was booed.
The only democrat President I like is Harry Truman. His dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima, and Nagasaki may have saved my Grandfather’s life, which in turn saved my Dad’s life, and mine.
I would love to have Lincoln birthday on 12th and Washington birthday on 22nd both back.
Dump mlk day
Especially the 2 most recent frauds: obama and biden.
I agree. It’s Washington’s Birthday. He was our first President, which is kind of a Big Deal. Lincoln kept our nation together through and after a civil war. These two men are each worthy of a National Holiday in their honor. Their stories are essential to our history and a proper understanding of what it means to be American.
Not me.
Would that this country could be worthy of him again. When he writes to the people as he is leaving office as president he says, “I shall carry it to my grave, as a strong incitement to unceasing vows that heaven may continue to you the choicest tokens of its beneficence; that your union and brotherly affection may be perpetual; that the free Constitution, which is the work of your hands, may be sacredly maintained; that its administration in every department may be stamped with wisdom and virtue; that, in fine, the happiness of the people of these States, under the auspices of liberty, may be made complete by so careful a preservation and so prudent a use of this blessing as will acquire to them the glory of recommending it to the applause, the affection, and adoption of every nation which is yet a stranger to it.”
And dump that new holiday in June whose name isn't even standard English.
