An anti-Trump guest on MSNBC called to cancel President's Day and said that the day is "silly," suggesting the holiday makes the office out to be a king.

"Way Too Early" host on MSNBC Ali Vitali asked presidential historian Lindsay Chervinsky if she wanted to completely "scrap" the holiday, to which Chervinsky responded, "It is a little bit silly. I mean, we have had some real duds, so I'm not sure we really want to be celebrating all presidents."

She added, "And the tradition actually comes from celebrating birthdays, which is a celebration that we inherited from celebrating the king, and I'm just not sure that that's exactly what we want."

The historian, who has said she was disappointed in the 2024 election outcome, added, "I think that we want to have a certain respect for the office. I totally get that. And some have done extraordinary things, but by celebrating all of them, I do think it causes us to think of the President as somehow other, when reality, they are a citizen, just like everyone else."

Chervinsky was then asked about Trump's near-quoting of Napolean Bonaparte on Truth Social where he wrote "He who saves his country does not violate any law," and told Vitali that the post was something that the American people should "push against" and added, "I think if we think of a president, as someone to celebrate, just because they exist, which is what the king was and that's why they celebrated the King's birthday. Then, kind of, it does evolve into that

Washington's birthday (Feb 22) and Lincoln's birthday (Feb 12) were separate federal holidays when I was in school.

Other Presidential Feb birthdays : William Harrison (Feb 9) and Ronald Reagan (Feb 6)

She has a point.

there’s only one President in the past 35 years that deserves any recognition.

Add to that Klinton and Karter. LBJ too. JFK. Come to think of it. Have the RATs ever had a decent potus? FDR was a good war time leader but his economic policies unnecessarily prolonged the Depression.

I don’t have a problem getting rid of President’s day...as long as we go back to Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays.

I don't. Add Clinton, Carter, L. B. Johnson, Roosevelt (either one), and Wilson.

Harry Truman was a liberal in the New Deal sense but very much a social conservative and his patriotism was real. Before that, you had Grover Cleveland, who was a classical liberal in the Jeffersonian or Lockean sense and an opponent of American expansionism into the Pacific.

I'd be in favor of scrapping President's Day and MLK Day and just going back to Washington's Birthday.

Better yet, just make Election Day a federal holiday and get rid of early voting, late voting, most mail in voting, except for overseas military and embassy personnel.

The federal holiday is still officially “Washington’s Birthday.” The federal government never recognized “Presidents’ Day,” though some states have. Others have other names for it. Lincoln’s Birthday was never an official federal holiday, though it was a holiday in many states and still is in some states.

Bingo. and they both got rolled into one day with a generic name. Yet MLK has a day named after him.

I would be in favor of going back to Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays on their proper days.

Not a fan of the imperial presidency, so President’s Day is a hard no for me. Washington and Lincoln works for me though.

According to U.S. Code, we celebrate Washington's Birthday, not Presidents' Day.
