California Ballot Initiative to Secede the Union Cleared to Gather Signatures
Breitbart ^ | 01/24/2025 | Katherine Hamilton

A California ballot initiative proposing that the state become its own country and secede from the United States has been filed and cleared for signature gathering.

If the measure makes it onto the November 2028 ballot, it would ask voters: “Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?” local news outlet KCRA3 reported on Friday.

The guidelines would require 50 percent of registered voters to participate and a “yes” vote from 55 percent of voters, which would indicate “a vote of no confidence in the United States of America,” according to the report. The measure would further show that the “will of the people of California” is to become a country.

“According to the initiative’s language, it would not change California’s current government or relationship with the U.S. However, it would create a commission to report on California’s viability as an independent country,” the report states. “The initiative estimates one-time election-related costs, and forming a commission on national sovereignty and independence would cost $10 million. It estimates that operating the commission would take another $2 million in annual state costs.”

The circulation deadline is July 22, and the initiative requires 546,651 valid signatures.

“Legally seceding the country would require a constitutional amendment, which would require the approval of Congress and 38 states,” the report notes.

Yeah we need to keep a few ports.

And although California costs a lot of federal dollars, the high salaries there provide more revenue than they take in

It’s many southern states that don’t pay their way. I relocated from CA to TN 10 years ago. Lots of people here on handouts and the work ethic isn’t what it could be

That’s the way the electoral college works, right? And Republicans can’t win without the electoral college. But it doesn’t change the fact that there are more Trump voters in CA than anywhere else but TX.

I have lived in CA for most of my adult life. DECADES.

water flows from the northwest when the valves are opened. that has been ordered into action tonight, per DJT. kill the delta smelt... and open the valves... happening.

California will be condemned with a financial overthrow. And it will be TRUMP who makes them solvent again.

But they will go belly up first.

That’s only because it’s a large state, that means nothing.

Unless you can separate out the red interior from the coast. Now we’d be talkin’. And I would maybe even move back

Those valves you’re referencing, and were referenced in Trump’s EO are on the Sacramento - San Joaquin delta...conjoined to the San Francisco Bay.

500 miles south of the Oregon border.

I’m hoping the fires in LA are going to wake some folks up to the failure of Democrat leadership.

Trump should propose a fleet of “Goodyear blimps” to transport shipping to bypass the ports in Kali-forncation. If California actually paid its energy bills to Dominion Resources, Inc. and other out of state providers, the frequent $1 stock writedowns in the 90s....

This is just as dumb as when places like Texas or Idaho make noise about seceding from the Union. It’s nothing more than venting.

Good. The only hope for the future is the entire US is broken up into like-minded smaller countries.

Same issue as last time. Slavery slavery slavery. California politicians want to have the people and all their own as the property of the State. We’ve been down this path before 164 years ago. Noem/Hegseth will need to move fast in getting the military brass to secure all facilities/resources and ensure that the Officers are stationed appropriately so we have no more traitors like Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson resigning from the military and then going to work for a foreign power.

“They would,be constantly demanding that the us support them when their money and resources run out!”

And that would be different from the current situation in what way?

I also lived in the klamath area and folks are mistaken if they think that water is NOT accessible to northern california from Oregon and other Pac NW regions.

Trump is NOT wrong.

If we were not paying federal taxes we’d probably do well. We contribute more than we get back, unlike a lot of other states.

I'm not in Cali obviously but does any of this bravado include the ever growing post fire rebuild? I see it mentioned as $250 billion. If you know anything about .gov at any level that number should be multiplied by 3 just to get in the ballpark. Looking to the future, do either of you think by seceding that your disastrous state and local .govs are going to get better or worse for future disasters that y'all seem to be prone to? Serious questions.

THEY CANNOT EVEN KEEP FIRE HYDRANTS OPERATING

IKR! I don't think their future is as bright as they think. Well, maybe their nights will be a bit brighter with the fires lighting the way.

“I’m not in Cali obviously but does any of this bravado include the ever growing post fire rebuild?”

The Feds should not give CA a single penny. CA can afford this.

CA will not be allowed to secede. The loss to the country would be far to great. It’s a moot question.

14% of the US economy and almost all innovation.
