In march of 2023 Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif) dedicated $750 million in taxpayer funds to build 1200 tiny-house homes to help mitigate the homeless crisis in his state. This works out to $625,000 per house. So far, none have been built.
In North Carolina, the Amish community built 12 tiny-houses for a total cost of $300,000 in 48 hours. This worked out to a cost of $25,000 per house. All of the funds were donated by the Amish community.
Newsom assailed the comparison as "unfair. First of all, the homeless situation in North Carolina arose due to hurricane damage. The homeless crisis in California is more of a chronic nature. Second, the scale of their project was small. My proposal envisions a project a hundred times as large. Third, we will be using union labor and following public construction guidelines, not donated labor from religious kooks. Let me also point out that those who will eventually receive our tiny-homes will live in California, not North Carolina."

Get rid of street drugs.
Provide inpatient drug, alcohol, and mental health treatment.

Uhaul data puts CA growth at #50 and North Carolina at #3.
First pull those obviously beyond help off the streets and put them in mental hospitals, once that big chunk of people who create the image that nothing can be done are gone, then get the second large group who give the impression that nothing can be done, commit the drug addicts to long term care/care based incarceration.
Once those are gone then what is left are the people that suddenly are revealed to just be bums and the lazy, the public will see them as a problem that can be fixed with some tough love and zero tolerance, and will be more supportive of harassing them and driving them out and cutting off government financial support and whatever other solutions are offered.
Without the mental hospitals of pre JFK removing the obviously helpless, then fixing homelessness seems hopeless and the public remains weak and uncommitted on fixes.
I couldnt wait to move to NC, hated leaving there for VA. I travel to Los Angeles twice a year and I would never live there.

There are distinct categories of so-called 'homelessness':
- drug addict
- mentally ill
- ex-cons/lazy bums gaming the system
- the truly homeless joe/jill, who by the way, is the vast minority of the homeless population (subgroups)
Note - there are "crossover categories", mostly in the first 3 (eg- drug addicted ex cons, mentally ill ex cons, drug addicted mentally ill, and drug addicted mentally ill ex cons)

ansel12, I wish you were in charge of how to fix the hopeless problem.
I would love to be but the reality is that conservative politicians have to sell this to the voting public, as usual the solutions are simple enough to think of, but someone has to convince 51% of the voters to approve of doing them.
