Business Insider just published the following:

My daughter repeated kindergarten because she couldn’t read. I ended up sending both my kids to private school because I don’t trust the public system.

Susie Coughlin was concerned when her daughter struggled with reading skills at her public school.
The mom of two was disappointed her district didn’t teach phonics as part of its literacy program.
She switched her child to a Catholic school where the girl thrived after being taught phonics.
Why have so many public schools stopped teaching phonics?
Because it works!
I worked with a kid 10 years ago that couldn’t write cursive of read an analog clock.
I seriously believe that the reason they don’t teach phonics is because phonics works. They don’t want a society of readers. People might actually have ideas. This is all about control.
Maybe too many people with education doctorates trying out their overcomplicated theories.
The tried-and-true methods worked in the past for a large majority of the students. The need is to find those students that don’t do well with those methods, and put them in special learning groups. That way, the majority is taught efficiently, and the others are getting the proper attention.
YMMV
I remember those! I don’t remember for me at what grade school level they were introduced. My guess is early!
That’s so they’ll be easier to manipulate.
Along with phonics is teaching the roots of words in greek and latin. It taught the relationship of words.
The teaching series by RC Sproul has done much to fill in what I missed in early education. He does an excellent job of explaining words.
I remember those, I used them too. 3rd grade.
1 word: Racism.
Leftarded thought leaders in educashun said it’s racist for us to all speak normal English. Therefore, drop it.
It’s very simple. The leftist elites would rather have good obedient little foot soldiers and slaves to their new world order.
In the computer age cursive is not that important. (I’m not saying has no value) but there are still analog clocks everywhere.
I remember SRA from my grade school in the 50s...I hated the tests...my ability to memorize has ALWAYS been a problem
Obviously.
Public schools are no longer teaching phonics because illiterate peons are easier to rule by the government.
There you go again.
Wrong, wrong, wrong.
Stop thinking with your brain! Genitalia rules!
Forget about teaching the roots of words, just teach actual Latin and Greek.
I studied both in high school.
They should just sell you the degree and be done with the charade.
Because teachers are mostly stupid and are definitely lazy union bums. It’s easier to just flash a word and tell them to say it a number of times and then move on. Phonics requires time and effort with your students.
Teaching cursive could be argued as simultaneously as artistic & physical education instruction. Its artistic component is obvious. The PhysEd component is in its training in “eye-to-brain-to-hand” coordination.
