Business Insider just published the following:

My daughter repeated kindergarten because she couldn’t read. I ended up sending both my kids to private school because I don’t trust the public system.

Susie Coughlin was concerned when her daughter struggled with reading skills at her public school.
The mom of two was disappointed her district didn’t teach phonics as part of its literacy program.
She switched her child to a Catholic school where the girl thrived after being taught phonics.
Why have so many public schools stopped teaching phonics?
Just a W-A-G, but may have something to do with a certain Democrat core constituency.
She is about 60 years too late with this question.
I taught my granddaughter writing, spelling and times tables. Found out the teachers no longer marked things wrong...so they didn't hurt the kids feelings.
Because now they teach ebonics.
Omelette: I was gonna pop a cap in yo azz but omelette it slide. 😏
There are two theories and both are useful, although I think history/better leans towards phonics.
I grew up with see and say. “See Dick run, see Salley run.”
Remember the toy, See and say.
But all kids are different.
Both are useful, it is not one or the other which was done.
“Why have so many public schools stopped teaching phonics?”
The reason is VERY SIMPLE, but yet impossible for most conservatives and others to accept:
Democrat leaders and activists simply HATE US SOCIETY, particularly our wealth. They spent their college life hating this country and now have worked their way into positions of power to put an end to the US that we all grew up in.
But what the hell, Public School is FREE and that’s all that I care - my kids can deal with getting their lives screwed up by those institutions, I want the bigger house and camper, as I DESERVE IT. Right?
“..Just a W-A-G, but may have something to do with a certain Democrat core constituency.....”
^THIS^.
And yes, about 60 years too late in asking the question.
The evil ones destroy everything they touch...including education.
“And yes, about 60 years too late in asking the question.”
...and most likely not believing Right-Wing Extremists like myself, even when our children PROVE we’re right.
KnowwhatI’msayin’?
I taught my granddaughter writing, spelling and times tables. -———————————————————
these were all taught at home at one time. Then we trusted the institutions, which works as long as there were good teachers.
Everyone here reads books to their kids, right?
They want students to fail upward.
The federal Dept. of Education is useless.
Teachers unions are more concerned with protecting members jobs than educating students.
Shall I do on?
Proofreading is fundamental, just like reading.
I certainly did. Every night since they were toddlers, until the oldest was in high school.
Both are conservatives today, in their 20s.
I retired 11 years ago but one of my colleagues who taught 7th grade English, literally snuck in 10 minutes of grammar every day, because they didn’t want grammar to be taught.
This, of course, stopped with Nancy Reagans “Just Say No” campaign. First applied to Drugs but libs moved on saying that “Hooked on Phonics” must be an addiction too. Therefore bad. Now cursive is no longer taught or practiced.
They don’t want the serfs to be educated, just indoctrinated.
Science Research Associates Inc. was founded in 1938 with a trade and occupational focus. In 1957, it moved into individualized classroom instruction with the iconic SRA Reading Laboratory Kit, a format that they translated to mathematics, science, and social studies commonly called cards. The labs were large boxes filled with color-coded cardboard sheets, and each sheet included a reading exercise for students. Each student would work on it independently of the other students in the class, consulting with the teacher only if he or she got stuck. The student would then follow up with multiple-choice questions. As the child moved ahead, the cards would advance in difficulty.(from Wikipedia)IBM purchased SRA in 1964. By this time, the company's line of primary- and secondary-school products had increased. Among the new products was the National Educational Development Tests, a series of standardized tests sold to schools as a method of testing students' likelihood of qualifying for college. SRA produced both IBM PC and Apple II software in the 1980s. Maxwell Communication Corporation bought SRA in 1988, and it became part of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill in 1989. Maxwell Communications collapsed, and McGraw-Hill acquired full ownership of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and SRA.
