A DISAPPOINTING CHOICE
Powerline Blog ^ | July 15, 2024 | John Hinderaker

I think [Vance] is a bad decision for a number of reasons.

At 39, Vance is too young...with less than two years in the Senate as his only political office, he has nowhere near the experience that a VP should bring to a ticket.

Vance, who is unknown to the general public, won’t bring Trump a single new vote. In fact, there is no reason to think that he is any kind of political powerhouse: in his only race, he ran far behind the other statewide Republican candidates in Ohio.

...Vance’s political views are...half-baked. He is still evolving...he denounced Trump viciously in 2016, while now he is an acolyte. In 2016, it was dumb of Vance to describe Trump as an “idiot,” as “noxious,” as one who is either “a cynical asshole” or “America’s Hitler,” just as it is dumb for Democrats to say the same things today. Vance’s never-Trumpism showed poor judgment, and 2016 is not exactly ancient history. Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019...we don’t need a president or vice president who is still on a voyage of self-discovery.

...on foreign policy...he strikes me as something close to an isolationist. He attacks the Iraq war in a manner barely distinguishable from leftists, and his statement that “I got to be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another,” is flippant at best. The world needs a strong America; I am not sure Vance agrees.

...Vance is a bright guy and a pretty solid conservative, I don’t think he is...ready for prime time, and I don’t think he makes a perceptible contribution to the ticket. Trump had a number of much better choices available, and I think his selecting Vance reflects the poor judgment to which Trump is occasionally prone.

Iraq war was idiotic of Jr. Bush. All it did was strengthen Iran. Iraq was no threat to us. Iran had been for decades. Vance may very well be a disaster. I guess he is like Anthony Kennedy. Could go either way. We’ll see if they don’t do another 2020

I hope you are right.

I ain’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I think JD is gonna make us proud. And if it comes to filling that seat, well that means Trump won right? So that’s a good problem to have. And we’re pretty solid red in Ohio. That seat’s gonna hold.

Vance is an excellent choice. Here's why.

(1) Vance has strong appeal to a key political demographic -- hillbillies -- the struggling working class, left behind, Scotts-Irish ancestry whites concentrated in Appalachia, the Upper Midwest, and rural New England. In that manner, Vance will sharply improve Trump's chances of carrying Virginia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin and thereby winning the election.

(2) Vance has strong ties to Peter Thiel and other Silicon Valley billionaires who can help with funding.

(3) Vance is smart, articulate, and combative when necessary. He is well suited to the traditional VP role of being an attack dog while Trump preaches unity and national reconciliation.

He’s turning it back into an -American- party. And this time including the ones who have been ignored, insulted, impoverished and abused. That was the theme of the night. That black girl with the tattoo on her forehead, the Nicaraguan legal immigrant, the Teamster, and JD, former USMC enlisted as Veep.

There was a “normal American” theme.

About time.

“That was a freaking body blow when he said Chamber of Commerce and the Business Council were nothing but Unions for the rich.”

So, that kinda makes the Senate a Union for the rich, too, one could say.

>> This nut wanted Rubio... That would have been an awful choice.

I agree.

I predict he’ll come around on Vance, eventually. But he has to pretend to be the smartest guy in the room for a while first. ;-)

Indeed. Although Nixon pushed through many liberal policies, the Left never forgave him for getting rid of Alger Hiss, Helen Gahagan Douglas and George McGovern.

I think in 2016 a lot of people were saying dumb things about Trump.

And with reason.

I personally voted for him with great big doubts. He won me over.

As for Vance not having been in DC that long.... I actually see that as a plus.

Hey to be honest who didn’t have reservations about Trump at the start of 2016. A NY republican is never to be trusted. But he proved that wrong.

The thing that got me about tonight is Byron Donalds sitting with them.....Are we seeing the next speaker of the house? I mean no balls Johnson and mitch getting boo’d... MAGA taking over...

“Trump had a number of much better choices available.”

And then Hinderaker proceeds not to tell us who he thinks were the better choices for VP over Vance. Wanna bet the names Rubio and Haley were on his list!

Ome thing we can probably be sure of is that he’s not a deep state guy like Pence.

That’s for sure, just go back to 2016 when many of us switched to Trump on FR and the Cruz supporters especially were beside themselves with anger and trashing everything about Trump.

I read the books Nixon wrote (or at least three of them, I recall) after he left the White House, and I found them to be quite sound to my ear, and highly rational and thought out. Not like the cartoon character played by Dan Akroyd.

But I respect Hinderaker and his take on this is concerning. What do you all think?

I agree that his take is concerning.

Yep.

My first choice was Scott Walker with Ben Carson as my second choice.

I figured that Trump was in it for the fun at first. When he kept on winning I realized he was serious about it and started listening carefully to what he was saying. One thing stood out, he did not hold people like me in contempt. After the past two candidates the GOP ran that was quite refreshing. Was he the calm steady guy that I tend to go for? Nah. He was brash and bold. Even flamboyant. But sometimes calm and steady does not do it. Sometimes you need a firebrand.

Like I said, he won me over.

I like Byron Donalds. I saw a barbershop thing recently where a bunch of influential black men (ten of them) got together in a barbershop to talk about Trump.

One of them was Byron Donalds, and another was Dr. Ben Carson. It was my first exposure to any significant aspect of Byron Donalds, and I was impressed.

Funny, the guy who owned the barbershop said he was misled about the event and thought it would be one about helping businesses in the area, not a political event, and he was shunned by his customers.

I thought the barber was a bit of a bump on a log, but at the time when I watched assumed he was just the quiet type and didn’t want to jump in with the more famous or accomplished people there.

Anyway, I really enjoyed watching it.

I did not originally realize that Vance was only 39. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t that be considered a millennial? That ain’t good. Makes some sense now why he said those dumb things in 2016. Why should he be trusted?

Richard Nixon was 39 and had less than two years in the Senate when he was elected vice president--and he proved to be one of our best vice presidents.

I'm not sure how we measure that ...
