The Controversial Legacy Of Hannah Duston, The Colonist Who Killed 10 Native Americans
All That's Interesting ^ | December 7, 2021 | Genevieve Carlton

After being kidnapped by Native Americans in 1697, Hannah Duston brutally killed her captors with a tomahawk — including six children.

In 1861, a small new England town erected a monument to Hannah Duston — possibly the first in the U.S. to honor a woman. But not everyone thinks Duston was a hero.

Almost 200 years earlier, Duston had been kidnapped by Native Americans from her home in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and placed with a Native American family. In the dead of night, she picked up a tomahawk and bludgeoned six sleeping children and four sleeping adults to death....

So? That is the way it was back then. The massacre of the Hungate Family is what sent Chivington to Sand Creek, the Cheyenne had been killing whole families in Kansas when Gen Sheridan gave orders to Custer to find and punish them at the Washita, and the Cheyenne in 1876 slaughtered Shoshone children and cut off the right hands of Shoshone babies.

I don’t know about honoring her as a hero, but I wouldn’t condemn her either after what her captors put her through. She was obviously traumatized and acted just as brutally toward them as they had acted toward her and the other people in the farmsteads they raided.

PS. I just watched this 17 minute episode on Hannah Duston a few weeks ago. This tells her story in more detail.

This lady definitely deserves a monument, and our respect.

She killed her captors and the people supporting them.

The Abenaki did eventually pay a heavy price for their incessant raids years at the hands of Roger's Rangers. Destroyed their settlement at St. Francis, Quebec during the Seven Years (French and Indian) War. Great old Spencer Tracy movie, Northwest Passage.

I bet her captors would have been surprised that she killed them but they couldn’t be surprised because they were dead.

My husband was a direct descendant of Hannah and I am a direct descendant of her sister Abigail.

So, you and your husband are cousins? I thought that only happened in Alabama.

/sarcasm, and I keed, I keed

No.

The author wants her to win a fair fight and become chief of the tribe and stops the killing of buffalo and lead the tribe to worship mother earth.

My sister used to get wicked ear infections every time she swam in that outdoor pool... And she still swam in it every time.

I also left an awesome toy metal bus there the last time that we ever stayed at that motel... I cried all the way home to NB Canada. If I had kept it I would’ve destroyed it like every other toy I ever had, but I bet it would’ve been a lot of fun crashing into rocks and other toys. Oh well... At some point that motel was destroyed and turned into a Volvo car dealership.

Good times long gone... Just like the times of Hannah Duston when you could get good money for scalps, like she did when she killed her captors.

Hollywood would make this film if she used a Glock and drove a pimped out Bentley to escape her captors, who were tree destroying whites disguised as native ecofriendly villagers, and this subterfuge was found out by a transgender multiracial pronoun employing person of indeterminate multiracial multicultural background.

I read the story as published by Charles C. Coffin, who wrote a series of books about the settling of North America and the founding of the United States.

That story was in the volume titled, “The Story of Liberty”. It was written for grade school students in the late 1800s. The language and syntax would probably stump most college students today. I’m not sure they would even be able to comprehend the stories, let alone the ultimate gist.

In any event, the Indian “children” were teenage warriors, old enough to butcher settlers without mercy. Hannah testified that her husband and 9 other children were working in the fields after she had just given birth to their 10th child, when the raiding party, supplied and financed by French Jesuits, descended upon them.

The rest of her family were barely able to escape with their lives, the raiding party happy to take Hannah and her midwife to sell into slavery in Canada, after murdering Hannah’s newborn right in front of her.

Charles C. Coffin was also a well known Civil War correspondent.

Don't do heroine. Withdrawal is a horrible experience.
