Do you ever hear about a new movie like the Road House remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, assume it’s terrible, mentally prepare your vicious takedown of it — and then watch it? And it’s actually. . . good?
I’d been so sure of my plan to see it, hate it, and slam it in a review. Another remake in an endless stream of them, for one thing. And the old 1989 Road House has a special place in the action film pantheon, because it’s so delightfully god-awful it takes on a kind of Mystery Science Theater 3000 delirium. It’s a surreal thing to visit that movie again, bringing the generally hideous 1980s mainstream cinematic experience back with a rush.
Some movies that were major releases then were so literally ugly, so incompetently made, so grotesquely stupid, so ideologically heinous, they become things of sordid wonder and hilarity when seen afresh.
Road House is like that.
If by some chance you never saw it, it’s about a “top cooler” played by Patrick Swayze who’s hired to clean up a honky-tonk in Jasper, Missouri, that’s been overrun by the bad element in a corrupt town. In the 1980s, due to the pernicious influence of Tom Cruise’s megahit, Top Gun, every action film protagonist had to be a top something, practically famous the world over.
In this film, a glorified security guard can awe everyone by simply saying his name is “Dalton.” The reaction is some version of “Not the Dalton.” .....
Then this new version comes out, it’s straight-to-Amazon-streaming, and the first thing we see is it has Jake Gyllenhaal in it. That’s a red-flag warning on an action film if ever there was one.

It was ok.
Leftist takes on American culture are subversive.
It’s hot garbage. Turned it off after 20 minutes. For one thing, at least a third of the dialog is the f word. And predictably, it’s like the rest of script seems to have been written by a 12 year old.
Women using the f word is probably one of the biggest turn offs.
The PC casting is kinda stupid.
But the stupidest thing about this movie (which is basically one giant fight) is the main character saying “no one wins a fight” and then proceeds to dominate by ………….winning fights…….
Actually, I thought it was a wise choice to not have a specific house band through the whole movie. Someone with brains realized that trying to replicate that for the movie would be a big fail, so they just used an assortment of bands that fit the locale. I also liked how they went over the top with the bad guys. It kept to the camp bad guys in the original. If it would have been too slick with the action, it wouldn’t have any of the flavor of the original. Still not as good, but a worthy effort. At least they didn’t try and make it an insulting remake that pokes fun of the era of the original, like the 21 jump Street reboot or Starsky and Hutch.
The Drinker’s review was good. The story seems so bad and the acting just as bad. The original Road House was a ridiculous movie to begin with.
Stop giving your money to Hollywood box checkers.
movie sucked, cast sucked not a beautiful women in the whole movie. jake sucked at being Dalton. Dalton the philosopher bouncer “Man’s search for faith. That sort of shit.” The new doc instead of being the hottest woman on the planet is a PC fembot with the usual haircut and dresses and talks like a man. Other than the names this is not a roadhouse movie. It is the usual PC/girl power racist crap. I wouldnt waste my time watching it again and I recommend you dont waste yours too.
Not likely I would ever watch it.
The original is “ICONIC”.
For some movies like Titanic, remakes are great! I don’t see it with Roadhouse.
I imagine Patrick Swayze looking down from that great cinema theater in the sky, smiling and saying, "Not as easy as it looks, is it?"
Jake Gyllenhaal has given some powerful performances in some very high-quality movies. I can’t imagine what possessed him to stoop so low as to be associated with a film this corny.
"It was a really big check!"
Would be better as an animated superhero children’s movie. Then I would have not watched it. Worst—I mean worst—movie that I ever wasted 2 hours of my time on.
I’ll stick with the Critical Drinker’s review: “Road House - Just... Why?”

I only watched it because of Gyllenhaal. Swayze pulled it off...Gyllenhaal not. It is absolute crap.
The original Roadhouse is basically an A-Team episode... with profanity, death and boobs. But the plot is straight out of A-Team... and the Hulk... also Kung Fu. It’s a tried and true plot.
I was a victim.
Firkin wee Todd it.
The first one was almost tongue in cheek in that 80s “ya we’re playing this as serious but you know we are all just having fun”. This one pretends that such an idiotic story is possible and takes itself far too serious.
Pretty good movie even with crazy Connor McGregor in it. It’s a good fight movie.
Sounds pretty good. Perhaps it shouldn’t be compared with the original Road House.
I sure didn’t agree with the author’s opinion of that movie at all. It’s a classic.
How do you beat Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliot kicking ass with Jeff Healey playing his awesome licks?
I’ll keep my eye open for the new Road House though.
