X FX recently released a new version of the wildly popular 1980s TV miniseries Shōgun.
Shōgun is based on a famous novel by James Clavell and is set in Japan in the 1600’s.
The network shares, “FX’s Shōgun, based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. “Lord Yoshii Toranaga” (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.”
However, at least one writer is concerned that the story of Japanese warriors is not “Black” enough.
The 2024 version focuses far more on the Japanese perspective. The white characters appearing in the first episodes representing Portugal, Spain, England, and Holland could hardly be deemed heroic. However, the character John Blackthorne, now played by Cosmo Jarvis, is already a pivotal figure and will be a hero, along with several Japanese characters. Others are already praising the new 10-part series as a cultural sea change from the 1980 version. I ask the question now that I naively didn’t ask in 1980. Where are the Black people?

The Carthaginians lived in Africa; however, they were CAUCASIANS!
I’d also add eunuchs and slaves in Arabia at about that time. Unfortunately those slaves under the Arabs were treated far worse than those in the Americas. Neither was any picnic though.
Carthaginians were not “black people.”
Sub-Saharans were stil eating berries, bushmeat and each other.
Kangzurai!
because they would have reverted to their “Roots” and et everyone else. except maybe Thurston Howell the third. too sour.
Sorry, but no black actors were available. They’re all working in TV commercials.
The Carthaginians were Berbers weren’t they? Not Negroes.
In Ahfreekah, where they belong.
The Carthaginians were NOT sub-Saharan Africans!
The Carthaginians were NOT sub-Saharan Africans!
From the rather confusing way this article was written, I don’t know whether it is Flavin or Blackthorne asking this.
Idiot
As mixed-race couples.
If you mean Africans they are mostly in Africa or enslaved in the middle east.
If you just mean non-Orientals with a skin tone darker then a paper bag check out India and Polynesia.
At that time if you were not Japanese you were pretty much not allowed in Japan. The Anui kept in the background even though they were more Japanese than the currently ruling ethnotype because they were different. And this was not a time to be different in Japan.
This sheet just isn't stupid...it's CRAZY stupid.
Exactly.
No! Carthage was settled originally by Phoneicians a Semitic people living on the coast of where Lebanon is today. Phoneicia founded cities all over the Mediterranean coast.
Carthaginians. North Africa. Not black, ie Sub-Saharan.
The best guess ( by "experts" on this matter ) is that they were Phoenicians.
