Journalists across the country burst into flames of panic this week, as bad news for the news business crested and erupted everywhere all at once.
Patrick Soon-Shiong, the billionaire publisher of the Los Angeles Times, laid off 20 percent of his newsroom. Over at Time magazine, its billionaire owners, Marc and Lynne Benioff, did the same for 15 percent of their unionized editorial employees. This latest conflagration had ignited at Sports Illustrated the previous week as catastrophic layoffs were dispensed via email to most staffers. Business Insider (whose parent company Axel Springer also owns POLITICO) jettisoned 8 percent of its staff while workers at Condé Nast, Forbes, the New York Daily News and elsewhere walked out to protest forthcoming cuts at their shops.
The news business has always been cyclical, dipping during economic downturns and then improving on the upswing. But not so anymore, as our economy has been surprisingly strong of late. Nearly everywhere you look — the Washington Post, NPR, Vice, Vox, NBC News, Texas Tribune, WNYC, Barstool Sports, just to name a few — companies have axed huge swathes of staff. Newsroom employment is down more than 26 percent since 2008. Buzzfeed News is dead. The magazine business has atrophied, too, as newsstand revenues have fallen from $6.8 billion in 2006 to $1 billion in 2022. Looking on as the media business bleeds out, journalism professor Jeff Jarvis, a man who once evangelized for the industry’s electronic future, folded his hands in his lap like a mortician and asked in his blog if it was time to give up on old news.

It’s true. At the rate rate the Fed is churning out $$$, the stock market will keep reaching new highs, and our grandchildren will all be millionaires!!
Wow! Who would have thought propaganda dressed up as news would be a market failure? Who could have guessed? /s
Just like the government, big media only tells us what they want us to know.
Its all nothing but manipulative agitprop.
They have destroyed any semblance of credibility they may once have enjoyed and therefore basically hit the self-destruct button on their industry.
“Our economy has been surprisingly strong of late.”
Such lies. Always lies.

LOL! You absolutely nailed it.
“America. Motel 6 to the world!’’
Our new national motto. (sar.)
What drives daily rags is advertising. Face it, with the downside of retail and youngsters going to Amazon for their products, retail stores aren’t advertising as usual. The modern buyers are all online. I myself don’t subscribe to any news rag. They’re all a bunch of leftist LGBTQ+, Muslim, loving retards.
Spit.
True, they don’t get it. Newspapers and many TV channels have simply turned into an editorial page bereft of any news. So, people turn to more honest sources for the news. They know your stance on Woke culture, LBGTQ and other topics and they are sick and tired of having it shoved down their throats. According to them, you can’t have a new TV show unless it has a gay couple on it. 911 has almost half it people in gay relationships. Why? TV ads...what happened to single-race couples? I see them all the time, but evidently the TV producers and ad people can’t find them. I could give a damn what you do in private as long as it doesn’t infringe the rights of others, but I don’t want it shoved down my throat on TV and I sure as hell am not going to pay for it print media.
“our grandchildren will all be millionaires!!”

And they will inherit the burden of a crushing national debt.
By then millionaires will be considered as poverty level.
I agree in part with your assessment. I really feel that at least for the 20 to 30 crowd, thoroughly saturated and steeped in Smart phones, videos and repetitive hyper advertising that’s really nothing more than propaganda most people , young people that is, can’t really read. I’m not kidding you.
I work with some kids in this age group and you can’t believe how functionally illiterate some of them are.
“But not so anymore, as our economy has been surprisingly strong of late.”
*************
An illusion of strength, enabled by massive government and personal debt.
Very good point.
Richly deserved.
The media has always been as much propaganda as news. Editorials telling the people what the publisher thinks should be rather than what is. When there were two or more competing newspapers in a city there was a chance for opposing views to be heard.
Newspapers whipped up the wars ,then radio and later television joined the agitation and cheerleading.
Factual reporting is rare,if not extinct on the big networks. MSNBC news on the internet is so biased it reminds me of Radio Hanoi.
I find late night hosts aren’t smart enough to come up with anything other than Trump jokes. However, it’s understandable. The people who attend or watch their crap shows are creatures of the same ilk and aren’t smart enough to understand anything other than a swat in the forehead with a retreaded joke.
Should read...”The Fake News Business Really Is Cratering”...
and probably only because their backers and main funders (See: Soros & Co.) figure that those fake news outlets have served their purpose and are no longer needed to secure the coup and takeover of the USA. And they might be correct in that assumption. Only time will tell... and I posit that we will know for certain within a week of November 5.
It turned sour many years ago, when Journalists became 'celebrities' as well as Politicians becoming 'celebrities' ... two sides of the same coin, preening for the camera while garnering millions of dollars to do so. Thoroughly Corrupt.
