ODOT awarded Portland $2 million in 2022 to clean up graffiti, and then another $1 million a year later, and now the fund is empty. As the recent Portland photo shows, you cannot tell that any extra $3 million has been spent. Now Governor Kotek has pledged an additional $10 million.
Portland chose to de-fund police and stop prosecuting people for minor crimes like graffiti, property damage and vandalism. They said it was a victimless crime.
The liberal mindset gave way to using tax dollars to solve the runaway graffiti problem, because liberals view most problems can be solved by dumping tax cash on it. It didn’t work, and now taxpayers will lose lost $13 million (and 100 police staff positions from defunding police).
Portland cannot escape nor spend-away their reality of being a soft-on-crime city failure.
Broken window spending is what I see.
Just like they did for black culture, for decades democrats have elevated, promoted, and glamorized this ugly marking up of our walls and fences and infrastructure.
Take all that money and build a jail.......then put those graffiti a-holes IN IT.
These people have poor self image.
They need something to feel positive about in their lives.
Hmmmmmm…..
Swimming lessons!
Take them 100 miles out in the Pacific and have them swim back in.
Portland’s a hellhole.
The USA needs to emulate Singapore if we really want to deter feral urbans from marking their territories:
https://irblaw.com.sg/learning-centre/vandalism-graffiti-singapore/
“It is an offence under the Act to commit any act of vandalism, attempt to do any such act or cause any such act to be done. Upon conviction, the penalty is a fine not exceeding S$2,000 or imprisonment not exceeding three years, and also the corporal punishment of not less than three strokes and not more than eight strokes of the cane.
However, caning will not be imposed on a first conviction if the activities carried out falls within section 2(a)(i) and “the writing, drawing, mark or inscription is done with pencil, crayon, chalk or other delible substance or thing and not with paint, tar or other indelible substance or thing”, or within sections 2(a)(ii) or (iii).”
Spokane, WA is on its way to being completely covered in graffiti. When we moved to the inland NW six years ago, it was very rare to see any graffiti anywhere except the downtown area of Spokane. Now the freeways, signs, bridge abutments, guardrails, sound walls and buildings are COVERED with it. The city keeps painting over it, but, just as in Portland, it’s a losing war.
The worst thing is it is headed east toward Idaho and, as near as can tell, Coeur d’Alene is totally unprepared for it. I’ve reported the occasional graffiti I’ve found around Coeur d’Alene to the city council and they have dealt with it immediately. In fact, one time I reported graffiti at a downtown park to the City Council around 7 pm and by 6 am it was gone.
It’s way past time we took despoiling our civic areas seriously. It’s an assault on all citizens. Long prison sentences are called for. I wouldn’t be unhappy seeing some hands lopped off the worst of them.
Start executing taggers.
>Take all that money and build a jail.......then put those graffiti a-holes IN IT.<
Make them paint it with a one inch brush. When it’s done, make them scrub all of it off and start again.
EC
It sounds like deporting them to Singapore will be the best solution.
A few canings and they will figure it out...
“You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.” - Ayn Rand..................
That would make some really great graffiti in Portland........
Plus some quotes from ‘1984’
I’ll bet if someone start spray painting TRUMP 2024 in Portland they’d get arrested...
Graffiti is obviously not a victimless crime since the taxpayers are the victim in that they have to pay to get it cleaned up.
OK
Those ‘Artists’ are using spray paint cans.
They emit Climate Heating gasses when used.
Go after them for Global Warming.
I’ll wait and see . . . .
Isn’t there some old song with lyrics something like:
Make ‘em scrub decks with a worn out toothbrush?
Yes, I moved here in 1999 and the city was clean and safe. Now Division street is filled with empty retail stores and trash every ware.
The massive development of apartment building on the north end near Wondermere has been a disaster. There simply isn't enough infrastructure to support all the new people. The apartments are just a future ghetto in the making
As soon as the new apartments were occupied the graffiti started showing up. The graffiti was not the local type stuff you would expect like "Jonny Loves Mary". Its was gang related MS-13 type stuff.
Having grown up in So/Cal I could reading the writing on the wall so to speak and instinctively new it was time to move farther away.
I moved out to Sun Crest and I'm loving it. I avoid going back to Spokane whenever I don't have to.
City planners are fools.
“...gang related MS-13 type stuff.”
Exactly right. I saw that happen in Silicon Valley. Almost no graffiti in the 70s and 80s, then it started creeping in and now it looks like South Los Angeles.
