Pentagon To Remove Memorial To Confederate Dead From Arlington National Cemetery , GOP Lawmakers Try To Stop It
Post Millennial ^ | 12/14/23 | Darian Douraghy

A group of Republican lawmakers are attempting to stop the Pentagon from taking out a Confederate monument belonging to Arlington National Cemetery.

Led by Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA), the group of lawmakers penned a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Monday that demands he leaves the Reconciliation Monument, also known as the Confederate Memorial untouched until at least the conclusion of the fiscal year 2024 appropriations process.

The monument was set to be taken out by the Pentagon’s Naming Commission, a group formed to rename and remove military installations named after the Confederacy. This came in the wake of the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots, Fox News reports

"Despite bipartisan support for this monument, the Naming Commission, established by the Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, clearly overstepped its legislative authority when it recommended that the Department of the Army remove the Reconciliation Monument from Arlington National Cemetery," the lawmakers wrote.

The Arlington National Cemetery website confirms this removal, with a section stating that "As required by Congress and implemented by the Secretary of Defense, Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) is required to remove the Confederate Memorial located in Section 16 of ANC."

It additionally notes that a "process to prepare for the memorial's careful removal and relocation has been initiated."

Clyde said that the memorial symbolizes American unity after the Civil War rather than bringing honor to the Confederacy, and that its removal would serve to desecrate the graves of Confederate soldiers buried there.

Calls to remove monuments and statues of American historical figures are nothing new; New York City recently weighed a plot to remove George Washington statues as part of a new ‘reparations’ plan.

"[T]he Reconciliation Monument does not honor nor commemorate the Confederacy; the memorial commemorates reconciliation and national unity," the lawmakers' letter continued.

"Furthermore, the Naming Commission’s authority explicitly prohibits the desecration of grave sites. Considering the hundreds of gravestones encircling the monument, it would be impossible for these graves to remain untouched if the Department of the Army proceeds with its proposed removal of the monument – both being a clear violation of Congress’ enacted statute and legislative intent."

Clyde, who is a Navy combat veteran, penned the letter along with 43 other House Republicans, including Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL).

The plan is for the statue to be moved to a site owned by the Virginia Military Institute, reports Cardinal News

"The Department of Defense must respect Congress’ clear legislative intentions regarding the Naming Commission’s legislative authority, and to move forward with removal of the Reconciliation Monument would be a clear affront to the separation of powers principles outlined by our Founding Fathers in our Constitution," the lawmakers wrote.

The Pentagon currently faces a lawsuit over the statue's planned removal from Defend Arlington, a group that represents Confederate veterans, among others.

“The Decleration is a creation of THE UNITED STATES.”

The 13 states created the Declaration of Independence.

Also, the 13 states created the federal government; the federal government did not create the 13 states.

States are the parents; the federal government is the child of the parents.

Please, don't let Biden confuse you on this.

Their is no right to leave,

The signers of the Declaration of Independence absolutely disagree with you. They assert that the right to independence is absolute, given by God, and irrevocable.

the Union was declared perpetual by the Articles of Confederation,

But absolutely contradicted by the Declaration of Independence which is from whence the Articles of Confederation obtained whatever legitimacy they ever possessed.

Do you not think England had laws forbidding secession too?

and Section 10 of the Constitution states that no State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance or Confederation

Once they leave, they aren't states anymore. They are independent nations.

Ok, I didn’t want to go here, but you asked for it. The Pre- Civil War South was anti- free market, and a form of socalism. It was even defend as such.

I have heard this claim before, and i've also heard it leveled at the Union side as well. Karl Marx certainly applauded everything Lincoln did.

Not sure what to make of the assertion of socialism in an era before it became a real thing, and I can't see how either side could be regarded as having embraced socialistic principles.

Both were pretty capitalistic, and there wasn't any social safety net for either side.

It sounded like you were talking about the federal government in your post 90.

You said: “No, they (the states) formed a new Federal Government.”

The Union was created on July.4th, 1776, by the agreement of all States present.

Yes, on that date a bunch of slave owning states seceded from a Union (Union of Crowns, aka United Kingdom) and form a confederacy. (Articles of Confederation.)

It’s always tough to look at issues in the past through the lens of the present, but I’d like to think I would have the courage to actively support the Underground Railroad when it became a method to spirit slaves to safer locations including Canada.

We would all like to believe we would do the moral thing, but I think most people would be a product of their society, and go along with their society even when it does things that are wrong and immoral.

We see a lot of that happening nowadays. This trans craze comes to mind.

“The UNION began on July 4th, 1776.”

I see the words Free and Independent States used in the DOI and I see the words “dissolve the political bands” but I don't see the word “union.”

Can you help me find it?

Pk, one last time. ALL the Colonies had to agree to leave Great Britian, or none would. They left together, and created one Nation from the begining.

The Civil War should not have happened, because chattel Slavery should not have happened. The Torah forbids it. Kidnapping a human being and selling one into slavery is a capital crime according to ‘Jewish’ Law. Christianity wandered away from its source, the Torah, and was co-opted and seduced by corrupt politicians. Eventually it generated teachings that were hostile to, and in direct opposition to the plain meaning of Scripture. God is not mocked; you reap what you sow. The southern soldier, as well as the northern, reaped the terrible harvest of a heresy spawned by discarding the Law of God. They paid the price for two thousand years olf darkness. Within their milieu, they answered the call of duty. The memorial should stay, and a National commitment must be made, to return to “the God of our fathers”, and his revealed Word.

As I read years ago, Lincoln was willing to PRESERVE THE UNION with slavery or without, but Preserving the Union was his main intent.

After all, 5 slave states did not join the South in the revolt. Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia was split and West Virginia went Union, and Washington D.C. was still a slave area at that time.
There were still enough Democrats in the North to keep John Breckinridge from becoming President. They voted for Douglas or Bell. Had the Democrats united wit one candidate, Lincoln MIGHT not have won. It would have been a close call.

I am surprised those “late Night” democrat votes did not show up to give the Democrats the Presidency as in 2020.

So your argument is that if one group has greater power, it's acceptable for them to subjugate others?

Isn't that considered morally wrong when it is done to slaves?
