New probe into College Football Playoff after Florida State snub

The final four-team College Football Playoff selection process has come under remarkable scrutiny after the controversial decision to include one-loss SEC champion Alabama over undefeated ACC champ Florida State, and now some powerful people in the Sunshine State are getting involved on an official basis.

State Attorney General — and Florida Gators fan — Ashley Moody has launched an anti-trust investigation into the College Football Playoff to see if it engaged in anti-competitive conduct.

"I'm a lifelong Gator, but I'm also the Florida Attorney General, and I know injustice when I see it," Moody said, via the Tampa Bay Times.

"No rational person or college football fan can look at this situation and not question the result. The NCAA, conferences, and the College Football Playoff Committee are subject to antitrust laws."

She added: "My Office is launching an investigation to examine if the Committee was involved in any anti-competitive conduct. As it stands, the Committee's decision reeks of impartiality, so we are demanding answers — not only for FSU, but for all schools, teams, and fans of college football. In Florida, merit matters. If it's attention they were looking for, the Committee certainly has our attention now.

Surely then it is time for prosecutors to take a hard look at the whole thing.

FSU played 2 SEC teams in their non-conference. And beat them both.

Alabama and the rest of the SEC play only 8 conference games while every other conference plays 9. So half their teams should have another loss if they weren’t playing Nicholls State in that 12th game.

And they play that extra pud-soft game near the end of the season so basically get a week off while all the other conferences play a conference team.

Lastly, ESPN, who is contractually tied to the SEC endlessly promotes them. They HAD to pull some strings with the committee to make sure an SEC team got in. It was so obvious.

It’s not a playoff or a championship if it gets decided in a conference room, and if some teams have no chance even if they win every single game.

Obama was a big supporter of this “national champion” fiction. The old Bowl system was better for the country, the schools and better entertainment.

“both teams have significant starters that elected to sit out the game, avoiding injury that would affect their NFL draft status.”

Anyone who does that should be immediately kicked off the team. Maybe only for a game they elected to skip, but kick them out and throw their personal items out into the parking lot.

When people make subjective judgements about the quality of a team, that is not a “championship”. Anything beyond the scoreboard is just baloney and probably fake.

And of course, it’s near impossible to create an actual scoreboard champion with so many teams, in so big an area. So they fake it for TV dollars.

Soccer is the closest.

Every team plays the other twice, and at the end the team with the best record is the Champion. No playoffs.

Too bad Ron DeDumazz couldn’t take time out of his pathetic presidential campaign to fight for FSU. 😣

They could have a REAL playoff. They do it in every other NCAA sport, including all the lower divisions in football. They just don’t want to; even the new 12 team system starting next year is still not a real playoff.

A real playoff MUST include automatic berths for all conference champions. That way all teams can reach the playoff based solely on an objective, in-field accomplishment. Also, teams cannot win all their games and be denied a championship under such a system. If there are at large bids, then there still will be controversy, but at least a team cannot be denied a chance to win even though they haven’t lost any of their games, like FSU and Liberty this season. Yes, Liberty would get a well-deserved chance to win a title in a real playoff. They probably would fail to do so, but they at least deserve the chance to be eliminated on the field by a better team, and not by a committee sitting in a hotel conference room in Texas.

Whoever wins the game will say, “I told you so “, otherwise the two teams will be significantly different than if they both were in the playoffs.

Wait until next year when the number of teams expands to 12, the bowl game will be even more insignificant

And you got to keep in mind that Texas, Alabama, Michigan and Washington were did not dare take on the mighty North Alabama Lions.

How many players who are soon to be NFL-bound will sit out the game?

Virtually ALL of the myriad of objective ranking systems in this sport came up with the SAME final 4 that the committee chose.

It will be EASY to defend in court. What will be hard is, trying prove FSU deserved to be considered one of the “Top 4” teams.

I don’t know the exact number, it’s not just NFL bound players but those transferring, for example the starting QB for Ohio State is in portal, I don’t think the Buckeyes will allow him on the field even if wanted to play

They’re stories about Oklahoma State’s starting RB could enter the portal, all he did was win Doak Walker award for the most outstanding RB in college football

Basically College Football has become worse than the NFL because at least in the NFL Players have a contract, in college a player can up and leave at anytime and leave more than one school

What would’ve been harder to prove is how Florida State is actually better than Georgia and Ohio State..

What made them better than those two teams also let out?

Georgia was a top 4 team all year.
So was Ohio State

Why did they get dropped so quickly and so dramatically?

A late loss dooms a team in the ESPN beauty pageant
And late wins also doom a team in the ESPN beauty pageant

College football and beauty pageants are unserious at their core.
So is things like Olympic judging

Makes it easier to opt out when ESPN wants the most eyes on their pageant.

Enjoy the ESPN pageants!

My general rule is if its a school from a smaller conference....ie ucf, Houston, Cincy, etc they’re going to get sky high for that game and treat it like their super bowl.

If they are matched up against a team from a major conference that is disappointed to be there, ALWAYS bet on the team from the smaller conference.

In the case of fsu and Georgia, I think a lot of starters are going to sit out. Almost all of fsu’s are going to the draft and will not want to risk an injury for a bowl game they know is meaningless. That could be true for UGA as well but UGA is not as loaded with Seniors and Juniors who are certain to enter the draft. Also if you look at the HS recruiting rankings until this season, fsu’s recruiting was very lackluster. Georgia as you know, has been killing it in HS recruiting every year since Kirby got there. Georgia has hungry young studs just dying for a chance to get in the game and show out. fsu does not have a 2nd string anything like that.

Take away Travis and Wilson....probably Coleman and Benson and what does that Offense have? Nothing. As awful as our Defense was, even we held them way way down. Georgia will shut them completely down.

You’re probably right and regardless of the outcome the fans of the winning team will be saying I told you so, in reality the game is meaningless

When you’re dealing with taxpayer funded institutions, it becomes the government’s business. Like it or not.

Then keep taxpayer funded institutions out of football. Let them become private sector minor league franchises.
