One of the major causes of "food insecurity" is that low income people often have problems with money management. This is well demonstrated by people using their EBT money on junk food when they first receive a deposit on their card and then having no money/credit left at the end of the month. The once a month delivery made sense when the stamps were sent though the mail, but now everything is down on a debit card. It seems that it would be simple to change the card to a weekly or even daily dispersal instead of once a month. After all, it is all on computers.
I know someone on SSI. He’s as dumb as a box of rocks and, as a result, would consistently be out of money by the 2nd week of the month. (He got $750 a month in SSI benefits).
I often thought that having his benefit deposited twice monthly or even weekly would help reduce the impact of his inability to control his spending.
I like this idea! Also, a mandatory money management class, could either be online or in person.
My oldest daughter could use this.
In southwest Virginia they buy cases of soda with the food stamps and then sell them to convenience store owners for half price.
Love these threads. Bunch of people who really know nothing about a subject ranting away like they know something.
The goal should be healthy food for the recipients.
working at a grocery store. big ol' caddy pulls up and about six kids get out. because momma can't get out she was so big.
each kid had a $1 food stamp. bought the cheapest thing they could to get real money back in change.
then momma jabba somehow managed to waddle into the store and bought her smokes. the look on my face told her she was so wrong in what she was doing.
she didn't care.
I'm all for helping those who legitimately need help. but not folks like her.
Agree. But that means the church is going to have to step it up.
Or they could just get a damn JOB, earn the money to buy food, and then eat whatever they please.
Now there’s an idea!
That’s right.
But their argument is with Jesus, who gave HIs followers that command.
True.
The skating rink incident occurred in 2001. I had already moved my family to Idaho and returned to wrap up some contract work in San Diego. The Rollerskateland rink was located at 626 L St in Chula Vista. 2 miles from my parents home at the time. It closed April 7, 2007.
I was in a wine and spirits store that was part of a large grocery store and watched a gentleman pay cash for a small bottle of rot gut whiskey and then whip out his EBT card to pay for a $1.99 bottle of soda to use as a mixer.
the AFDC came in the mail days!!!
i remember that stuff, stayed away from any place on the 1st of the month..
Do you know that many low rank enlisted military receive food stamps for their families?
Our Social Security checks came on the 3rd. That was the day we saw our ‘stepdad.’
