Congratulations to NBC. It passed CBS last year as the most-watched network on television -- because NBC's viewership fell by only 7%, while CBS lost 8% of its viewers.
That's according to Variety.
45 of the top 50 TV channels and networks lost viewers. Only 3 gained (ESPN, ESPN 2 and the Paramount Network). TV Land and Bounce TV neither gained nor lost viewers.
The drop in viewers came despite an Olympics, a popular war and a federal election.
It is pretty spectacular that people tuned out coverage of a very close election. Fox News viewership dropped 1%, MSNBC dropped 22% and CNN dropped 34%.
You cannot blame the drop in viewers on cable cutting.
Variety said, "There may come a time when it just doesn’t make sense to rank the broadcast and cable networks anymore. Actually, that time is probably already here, with most viewing now taking place via streaming and other means. And yet, Nielsen’s numbers — which include time shifting and other ways people watch, not just live — are still the best barometer of who’s watching what in the linear world."

Wife watches stuff on her Roku. Looks like chick garbage......
Emily does Paris or some such dreck.
I drop in a DVD now and then. Got rid of cable several years ago, sure do not miss it.
If it wasn’t for the occasional football game I would never watch network television.
I don’t have a TV now, and it’s pretty jarring in a culture shock sort of way to watch it in a bar or something like that.
But no cable and we use Roku Channel, Pluto, and various other freebees for other coverages. We have an antenna, for local stuff, but Roku has some local stuff it streams, too, for free.
Roku has just been wonderful and on our Black Friday-bought TV, content just looks great.
No cable for us. Just Internet.
I haven't watched TV (except for sports) for decades. The first Seinfield episode I watched was the last one. Stupid. Never saw Friends.
I will be horible in trivia games.
“a popular war”...WTF? It’s not popular to me. It’s an enormous waste of lives and resources. Europe is freezing because of this war and because of elitists who want the rest of us securely under their boots.
I watch little tv because it has become irrelevant and, between COVID and Trump, they lie with impunity and don’t care who they hurt. If it weren’t for live sports, I wouldn’t watch at all.
They took what was once a noble business and made it mere propaganda for a government that is also mere propaganda.
most viewing now taking place via streaming and other means
Many agree with that.
I mostly leave my tv on the 80’s music channel.
I rarely watch other channels.
PBS, usually a cooking show.
Food Network but not as often as I used to watch.
Hallmark channels for Golden Girls and Murder, She Wrote.
Disney XD for Phineas and Ferb.
Boomerang for Scooby Doo.
Cozi for Columbo.
Until I watched that crappy new years show just to see Duran Duran, I hadn’t even changed the channel for weeks.
I am not even sure when or even if those shows are still on those channels.
I watched the last month or so of Cardinals games and that was just for Yadi and Wainwright. I went from watching and listening to every game for 30 years to I won’t even bother at all this coming season.
Another reason why people drop shows:
‘Yellowstone’ Actress Lilli Kay Talks About Playing Dutton’s Confidante And A “Lesbian On The Range”
I'm not sure where you get your news, but Europe is having a record setting warm winter. NG prices are lower than they were a year ago and NG storage is over 20% above 5 year average and over 55% above last year.
Thousands of records shattered in historic winter warm spell in Europe
I haven’t watched TV going on 15 yrs.
Ditto.
I see where YouTube won the rights to air the NFL Sunday Ticket for the next few years.
Yeah, for me that show jumped the shark early in season 2.
Smart kids. Good job raising them.
Oddly enough pretty much all I watch on tv is the MeTV channel and it’s stuff I remember as kid.
“Perry Mason’’(an excellently written and acted show), “Wagon Train’’, “Combat’’. Never missed an episode of “Combat’’.
I got tired of being lied to and tired of being tired so I quit watching TV years ago. I occasionally find myself in an employee break room with the TV on. If nobody else is there I shut it off.
We DVR Jeopardy (but they are in the process of jumping the shark with their constant promotion of odd people), Blue Bloods, NCIS (yes, we still watch it) and a couple of other shows. Our relaxation shows in the evening, we get from a few British channels that we pay for. British serial shows that we enjoy.
I have watched some college football games this season, but other than that, no regular TV. It is such a wasteland that is it truly a waste of time.
