Jackie Kulback was just one of the Pennsylvania GOP leaders who was worried in May when Doug Mastriano clinched the Republican primary for governor.
Mastriano was a MAGA state senator who worked to overturn the 2020 presidential election and Kulback thought he would struggle to win the critical battleground state in the fall. But she’s feeling differently these days.
“The higher the gas prices go, the more electable Mastriano is,” said the chair of the Cambria County Republican Party. “Honestly, I feel this is Mastriano’s campaign to lose.”
In the immediate aftermath of Pennsylvania’s messy gubernatorial primary — which included an ill-fated, last-minute attempt by the GOP establishment to stop Mastriano — many Democrats and Republicans in Pennsylvania thought the race was all but over. Attorney General Josh Shapiro, the Democratic nominee, is a first-class fundraiser with a record of winning tough statewide races. He emerged unscathed from the Democratic primary after clearing the field.
Mastriano, on the other hand, has a shoestring campaign, regularly antagonizes members of his own party, and is known for his far-right views on hot-button issues. He chartered buses to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, where he appears to have been part of a crowd that crossed barricades. He believes in no exceptions for an abortion ban. He has said that the state legislature has the power to appoint presidential electors, and as governor, he would have the power to “decertify” election machines. When Mastriano pulled out a win in the primary, many national Republicans kept their distance and, privately, assumed Shapiro would waltz to the governor’s mansion.
But as the political environment has worsened for Democrats across the country, the gubernatorial race in Pennsylvania has begun to look more competitive than either party expected.

SHOCKING. He's read the Constitution.
…but we’re going to help him win his primary race.”
Doug Mastriano is a good man and will make a great governor.
Voting for him is the ONLY thing that makes me want to return to PA.
(some utopian one-world government)
Probably. With Obama at the head of it. They worshiped him at a Global Citizen Festival.
And so did the United Nations guy
I never saw a flag pickup truck in that format before. The trucks were prominent during the summer and fall of 2020 in the era of George Floyd and COVID.
They were formatted with Trump flags, MAGA flags and or course Old Glory.
It made me suspicious to see that here in PA today.
PA resident here. Some PAC is running ads against Mastriano and Oz, and both are practically identical except for the name of the politician they are smearing.
Shapiro has been spending money for MONTHS on a couple of ads that, while not identical to each other, are close to being the exact same thing. They say Shapiro is great because he helped prosecute pedo Catholic Priests. One of the two ads features a guy that mumbles so much it’s hard to figure out what he is saying.
I believe they are a big waste of his campaign money and they in no way make a case why Shapiro would be a good Governor.
THIS is what the SWAMP is calling “Far Right”:
Doug Mastriano served in the U.S. Army from 1988 to 2017 and reached the rank of Colonel. Mastriano earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Eastern University in 1986, a master’s degree in strategic intelligence from the Joint Intelligence College in 1992, a master’s degree in airpower theory from Air University in 2001, a master’s degree in military operational art and science from the School of Advanced Air & Space Studies at Air University in 2002, a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College in 2010, and a Ph.D. in history from the University of New Brunswick in 2013. His career experience includes working as a faculty instructor with the Department of Military Strategy at the U.S. Army War College.
Living in PA - Shapiro is bombarding airways with the EXTREME label attached to Mastriano. A little concerned that there has been ZERO response.
No one worked to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Many worked to get a fair counting of the votes.
crossed barricadesUhm, make that "walked freely through opened gates."
That is what I’d call a well qualified candidate!
Mastriano’s campaign slogan is “Walk as Free People.” That alone would earn my vote if I lived in PA
How much money does Mastriano have vs. Shapiro?
Shapiro has likely had a nice left-wing money bomb campaign whereas the right has no such organization.
politico is compromised
“Mastriano…….is known for his far-right views on hot-button issues.”
Far right views like:
The 2020 election was stolen.
The Jan 6th riot was an FBI false flag operation.
Men have penises, women have vaginas.
Man-made Climate Change is a socialist scam.
The My Body, My Choice argument for abortion rights is disgusting.
The 2nd Amendment is our protect against federal tyranny.
President Trump was right to put America First.
Here in PA, the Democrats’ anti-Mastriano ads catch him on film him openly saying such frightful things - complete with sinister chords droning in the background and filmed in WWII era black and white to make him look like Mussolini -
But the whole time I’m thinking…wait…is this ad supposed to make me NOT want to vote for him?
