Why we won’t know the winner of the Oz-McCormick Senate showdown for a while: Pennsylvania is still processing thousands of mail ballots in the too-close-to-call race.

With just a few tenths of a percentage point separating Mehmet Oz and Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania’s GOP Senate primary, it may be weeks before we know who won.

There are still thousands of votes left to be counted — largely absentee ballots that will be processed slowly in the coming days.

And once those votes are tallied, the race is likely headed to a recount — a process that could drag into early June, according to state law.

Here is what you need to know about Pennsylvania’s still-uncalled GOP Senate primary.

What is left to count?

The Pennsylvania Department of State told the Philadelphia Inquirer that there were still over 100,000 mail ballots that have yet to be included in the state’s results. While the State Department was unable to say how many of those were Republican ballots, about 21 percent of the counted mail ballots for Senate were in the GOP primary. If the same rate holds, that works out to more than 20,000 outstanding GOP votes.

There are also some counties still reporting in-person votes as well, but those numbers are likely smaller than the remaining mail votes.

Why does counting these ballots take longer?

The reason it’s taking more time to count the mail ballots is likely due to Pennsylvania state law. By law, county election officials cannot process mail ballots in the state until Election Day.

There are a lot of steps involved in “pre-processing” mail ballots — everything from physically removing ballots from multiple envelopes to verifying that they were cast by a valid voter — and counting them, which means it tends to be a slow and time-consuming task compared to tallying votes that were cast in person.

On Steve Bannon’s War Room Wednesday morning, he interviewed a correspondent in the Philadelphia suburbs.

That man said Oz did well in the Philadelphia suburbs, and there are 22,000 ballots still to be counted in Lancaster County.

There was a problem with the coding on those ballots, and they could not run them through the voting machines because of that error.

The correspondent went on to say that Oz should do well in Lancaster County.

As for the mail in ballots from other parts of the state, who knows.

Like President Trump correctly says, we need same day voting and no early voting. And no mail in voting.

A recount in PA must be completed 26 May 2022.

There aren’t enough GOP votes left to be counted to change the results of two folks within .5 of 1% of each other.

Who do these Democrat vote counters want to win this - the RINO or the Trojan Horse?

They should pass a law that says they have to stop counting when the number of ballots exceeds the number of registered voters by more than 150%.

Democrats would call that voter suppression.

In many ways, this is, actually, Trumps’ fault! Why did Trump pick Oz, out of all of the candidates running? How is this not a mistake?

No mail-in ballots mean military personnel are disenfranchised.

Set up special voting locations at U.S. military facilities.

It’s not just mail in ballots.

PA has RCV-enabled voting machines.

Those have got to go.

someone will know the tally...just not thee and me.

Mailed ballots should be severely limited or banned.

Maybe it’s Barnett’s fault. She clearly took votes from Oz.

I don’t like any of them. I’ve never seen 3 more unqualified candidates running against each other. Sorry, Barnette is not ready for prime time (i.e., Madison Cawthorn). Oz is a piece of garbage. McCormick is a bigger piece of garbage.

These same losers who claim it’s too scary to vote in person, go to restaurants and retail shops maskless every day.

And replace at least 3 of his mistresses.

“everything from physically removing ballots from multiple envelopes to verifying that they were cast by a valid voter “

This crap never occurred for decades or centuries. In the days of high tech this is unacceptable. Cheating is the only reason it happens now.

The author must be unaware that this is not an issue; at least it doesn’t have to be. As the envelopes are received by mail the first envelope can be removed and discarded. Immediately after, the second envelope can be used to verify the voters’ eligibility.

Separate the legal ones from illegal. Set them all aside.

The morning of Election Day, heavily supervised in a protected room, staff opens the inner envelopes of the verified ones so the ballots can be run with the ones received from the precincts after polls close that day.

Holding on to everything that comes in the weeks prior to the election is ridiculous.

Of course, additional staff must be hired to do that, but additional staff always is brought on during elections.

Post-election the only ballots that should be outstanding are ones that are non-processable, e.g., spoiled, and must be facsimiled and run in a small batch later.
