After years of wondering what caused the last couple of generations of kids to start speaking in such an irritating manner, like silly children, I finally made a short audio recording with an overview of the bad speech habits of young people and brief advice for breaking those habits.
I know, right? / s
For me, the Vocal Fry is the most irritating. If someone is speaking with this on TV, I immediately turn it off.
I wanted to keep the video brief, so I didn't spend much time on each point, including "LIKE."
Having family members in public education and their explanation of what goes on in the typical English class, I’d say the problem is unfixable.
It’s complex involving failure of parents & school administrators, dumbed down curriculum content, teachers limited authority to correct grammatical, pronunciation and spelling errors without being accused of ‘racism’, cell phone use and texting instead of conversation and social media that has created cultural and generational isolation in young people and more, much more.
And, I believe it is deliberate.
Yep!
Yes,they do the glottal stop thing in place of a soft T or D.
In many American dialects, the glottal stop is sometimes used in place of a hard T, especially if the word ends in “en” or “on”(eg kitten, cotton) or even a soft D (eg Biden, cordon).

But the thing I most wish they would clean up? F’n using the F’n Fword F’n five F’n times in every F’n sentence!
Good points!
Like, I was literally just thinking about this the other day.
The “f” word thing gets me, too. If you can’t carry on a normal conversation without it, your vocabulary needs work. I’m not talking about moments of anger, or hitting your thumb with a hammer, just everyday conversation.
I stopped reading an article because it was sprinkled with that word. Was it a news or political website? No. It was a COOKING website and the article was about how to make gnocchi.
It’s not a new word, it’s been around for generations. It’s only been in the last generation that people seem to be unable to talk without using it.
Didn’t realize that was you!
HAHAHA!!!
:-) Yep, it’s me. And I know there’s plenty more that could’ve been said. I’ve already thought of things I meant to include, but forgot.
There’s a Youtube cooking guy that I watch someitmes. He’s a very good cook with interesting recipes, but his language is often horrible.
He’s a middle-aged man who ought to be over this. I’m sure his kids have grown up speaking the same way; and so it goes...
They can’t talk or write to save their lives. It’s pathetic.
Great video! The word that gets me is “literally.” My daughter and nephew would drop that into every conversation a dozen times and the always inverted it’s meaning.
“That truck literally weighted like a million pounds, it was so huge.”
...weighed...
The “didn’t” and “important” speech is how Blacks talk, which has been tragically adopted by White kids, along with the endless “bruh” and “imma” (formerly “I’m going to”)
Didn’t we have this exact discussion 60 years ago?
Same one, only different, Larry. :-D
