... or as we say at our job, “He was offered his resignation.”
They had a number of reasons, my guess is as the internal investigation goes deeper, the board HAD to learn that the boss was lording over all this mess.

according to Joe Concha, he has connections with some at CNN, Zucker is basically the fall guy because the REALLY big scandals are about to fall, this is just a distraction to a much bigger picture

Maybe. My take on this was that it might actually be Malone pulling the trigger on this even if he has not yet there with ownership. If there are a lot of scandals out there, he wants them all revealed and dealt with by ATT before he takes over.
