Champlain Towers is a 12 story condominium building located in the small, beachside town of Surfside, Florida, about six miles north of Miami Beach. Miami-Dade County police said 53 residents have been identified and located safely; however, as many as 99 people are reported missing. There were about 55 units in the tower that collapsed.
The collapse happened at approximately 1:30am this morning.
The building is 40-years old and is located in an area very familiar to CTH. This is an affluent community with many Jewish residents. Our thoughts and prayers are with the missing and their families. CCTV from a neighboring complex shows the center of the tower gave way first, with the rest of the structure collapsing into a pile of rubble. The cause of the collapse is unknown.
Surfside Commissioner Eliana Salzhauer said “the building was undergoing a required 40-year recertification to ensure its structural integrity, and that the building’s roof was being redone. She added that residents told her a building inspector had visited Champlain Towers on Wednesday, but she did not know what the inspector found. It is unknown if any construction activity contributed to the disaster.” (Miami Herald Article Link)
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis arrived on scene this afternoon and gave a press conference:
Thank you for update.
I imagine everyone in those identical buildings are scrambling to get out, quick.

Maybe... but as inferred in post 48, this probably has less to do with the ‘building design’ than it has to do with the interaction between the foundation and its adjacent soil conditions. If for example there is a nearby water pipe that is leaking and over time, it has turned the soil below the foundation into a ‘soup’, I’d be concerned with how far that issue extends down the street....
Terrible! Prays for lost souls and their loved ones who survived.
Sounds so quaint and bucolic.
Ah....thanks for confirming my sharp eye :-)
(And, for the comparison.)
If you are doing an inspection be sure to look and see if there is any thermite cord wrapped around the support pillars. The way this building collapsed looks like a controlled demolition. Now that the feds are on the scene we likely will never hear the truth, and will be left to speculate forever.
The only hope is that DeSantis can infiltrate their group with some of his own to keep them more honest.
159 unaccounted for. Up from 99
One column? I would say not. From the video it looks a lot like the Controlled Demolition Inc. videos we’ve probably all seen.
A whole lot of interior columns would have to go in sequence. And it takes weeks to prep.
Yes
Wrong era. No, the building was racist.
??
Absolutely.
The reported “building inspector” could have been some other city government functionary that was mistaken, especially in the aftermath, by residents - now survivors - to be a building inspector.
Fox News webpage had some good still photos up yesterday. The garage of the still standing portion of the building shows the floor dropped 8-10 feet, and there is a large void or cave where the garage floor ripped away and dropped from the first floor of the building. It looks like the base the building was built upon dropped in a sinkhole.
Anyone know, is there a swimming pool at the site?
Just curious.
Just ran across this. FWIW....

Pool, water main...
If city/county malfeasance had anything to do with this, no wonder their flunkies in the enemedia are trying to blame global warming.
OK. Thank you for the observation.
If that is the case, it was totally unpredictable and not a man made issue.
That does not make it any less tragic.
Thanks for photo of Surfside.
It brings context to the situation.
It appears that the ocean is on both sides of the strip of land.
That would make such construction very difficult. Even if built today.
