Just a horrific event. I wonder if the collapse started at an elevator shaft

I have no clue. If the elevator shaft is a central support center for the structure, I guess it could be a critical point mechanically. Even if it was a good mechanical design, something this large should have been, it could be something as simple as poor quality concrete. 40 years ago, testing of concrete was not as scientific as today. But even then, something this large should have been good quality.

Salt water (right on the coast) is very hard on concrete and on reinforcement rod and or mesh. I’m sure that structural engineers are examining the rubble as we speak.

Nobody has said anything about an explosion. After looking at the video, it certainly looked like what you suggest.

Why does the CCTV video start after the first section is already collapsing? I would expect to see about 5-10 seconds of quiet before the collapse but they only show after the event begins...

Thanks for that information. Wonder if they knew there was a major issue. One of the units if it was a condo would go for that.

Why? the video’s we had seen in the news was minor to this one. This one looked like something you’d see in a planned demolition.

Early reports were 1 killed 8 injured. No mention of potential number of people who could have been in the building.

It is an absolutely horrible disaster.

They may have been reluctant to show the scope of it, until they ruled out a terrorist attack.

The known dead is now at 4, and the unaccounted for people is up to 159.

4 removed from rubble alive.

159 still missing.

35 were rescued from the still standing part of the building.

So far around 100 people thought missing are now accounted for.

Also reports of fires occasionally breaking out in the rubble but they’re put out quickly.

They showed the building and you can see a kids bedroom with bunk beds next to where the building gave way... 4 people are dead now.

Is it possible that a car crashed into one of those columns as it was racing through the parking area?

Hitting one load-bearing support column shouldn't bring a building down. For this to happen other load-bearing parts of the structure would have failed unless the building design was flawed.
