Is the rift opening up in Tanzania? State of panic as soils are liquefying and swallowing homes in Dar es Salaam

The soil under Dar el Sallam, the finance capital of Tanzania, is mysteriously liquefying under homes and businesses.

Mud has been seen coming out of the soil, destroying at least 9 houses (total collapse), cracking tens of others and prompting mass evacuations.

Residents started taking the situation seriously when a child and a cow almost drowned in one of the mud pools

The source of the oozing mud is unknown

It was first thought it could be coming from a small stream. But then the similar phenomenon was discovered in many neighboring districts of the town. So what the heck?

According to residents of a neighborhood, a small hill formed at the center of an abandoned football field. And now, this small ‘volcano’ seems to be the epicenter of the ‘mudslides’ in the area.

Yes, it is probably no new mud volcano formation and eruption. Dar es Salaam was not built in a volcanic region.

The so-called great Rift Valley is a series of connected cracks in the geography that extend up Africa through the Red Sea and Israel into Lebanon. Geologists have been watching part of the African rift spreading apart for years, so this movement would seem consistent. Different plates moving about in their own directions etc. if there’s ever a serious earthquake anywhere along the rifts it won’t be a huge surprise, either .

the plates are moving all the time. 5.9 earthquake offshore in August and shifting since then may have opened up an aquifer

lava tubes could transport water - there are many extinct, and 3 within historic recording times, volcanoes in Tanzania

I wonder if the water table is being shifted if volcanic/seismic activity is lifting up the surface layers of soil and rock?

What a perfect opportunity. Turn it into a horror movie set with people getting sucked into the Devil mud!

They’ll make a fortune.

The rest of Africa is moving northward. It is closing the Mediterranean and turning the Alps into the new Himalayas. When Africa moves into Europe in the next few million years, there goes the neighborhood.

Scientists Unearth Revealing Details about the World’s Biggest Mud Volcano

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/scientists-unearth-revealing-details-about-the-worlds-biggest-mud-volcano1/

Their reconstructed image revealed Lusi and the adjacent volcanic system are indeed physically joined via the fault zone. The scientists also discovered hydrothermal fluids—which originate in the volcanic system and feed Lusi—likely migrated vertically from at least six kilometers below the surface. This would mean that, technically, Lusi is not really a straightforward mud volcano. Rather, it is a hybrid structure—half hydrothermal system, half mud volcano.
