Chewy doubles hiring projections to 1,200 at Dayton fulfillment center (Ohio)
The Dayton Business Journal ^ | October 18, 2019 | John Bush

An online retailer that opened a massive fulfillment center near the Dayton International Airport this summer is doubling its initial hiring projections.

Chewy Inc., a Dania Beach, Florida-based retailer that provides pet food and supplies, has already hired 1,000 people and is looking to fill another 200 positions by year's end. That will bring its total employment to 1,200. Chewy initially projected the new center would create 600 jobs, so the actual employee count will be twice as many as originally reported.

Additionally, the company has already promoted 30 people to leadership roles at the site, Chewy Vice President of HR Operations Greg Walsh told me.

"It's really a great part of what Chewy offers to the community," Walsh said. "It's not just a job and then no growth — there's a lot of growth and a lot of opportunity. Also if people want to grow in the community, they can stay here, and if they wanted to go to another location, they can do that as well."

Yesterday I found out that a fairly large company was investing almost $8 million to build a new plant in my old home county. This is a place that has lost at LEAST four or five major industrial employers in the past two decades and several smaller companies. My original hometown is the model of small town decay. There have been no new industries coming at all until this past week's announcement and I'm hearing that others may be on their way. This kind of possible economic turnaround is... well, it would be miraculous almost.

It seems to be happening across America. Curious, that.

I’m glad people are pampering their pets. I just hope that they treat and cherish their children equally. October is Respect Life month.

I’ll vouch for Chewy. User friendly website, fast shipment, and great customer service.

I won’t mention that other PET COmpany that totally botched a medication refill, and still couldn’t get it right after multiple calls to the COmpany.

I have used Chewy for about a year now and couldn't be happier. If there's a problem, their support staff is excellent at resolving it and you usually have your product the next day.

It's always an exciting day when the Chewy Box is delivered!

I’ve switched to Chewy as well. The other big name pet supply retailer did a not so smart thing and is now charging $4.95 for shipping.

Orders from Chewy ship the next day and I get them within 2 days of ordering. Free shipping delivered to my door beats going to the store every time.

I agree, that said I love having the delivery man lug a 45 pound bag of pet food to my front door. I don’t have to go to the store and deal with it. FWIW Chewy is cheaper than Costco for the exact same food.

Thank you! Puppy 'Sunshine' in my garden this past Spring, and then all grown up. Treeing Walker Coon Hound. Due to the wider-than-normal white 'blaze' on her face she is not to 'standard' so we can't use her for a Bench (Show) Dog or for breeding, but she is going to a hunter in MN who owns her Mama and treats his hunting dogs like pets. She'll have a good life. :)

I agree about them having the best customer service ever! I have been using Chewy for about 4/5 years now. Can’t say enough good things about their customer service. I just hope that now they are expanding, it doesn’t suffer? About 2 yrs ago, my Aunt ordered food for her dog, Kayla, from Chewy. If I remember correctly, the order was around $100. Kayla passed away about a week after the order arrived. My Aunt called customer service to find out if she could return the unopened food for a refund....she explained Kayla passed away to the rep. They told her to donate the food to her local shelter or rescue and they would credit her account. A few days later, my Aunt got a sympathy card from Chewy. I don’t know if they do that for everybody, but their kindness really touched us. You just don’t find customer service like that anymore, so when you get a company who goes over and above, you really appreciate it and praise them. I recommend Chewy to all my friends with pets.

“They told her to donate the food to her local shelter or rescue and they would credit her account.”

That’s what the told us when they sent dog food instead of cat food, so we donated to our vet. It also was about a $100 order. They sent the cat food immediately.
