I love this time of year. Just got done with a brisk walk on this crisp, cool, cloudy autumn day in Southern Connecticut. All the leaves turning colors and gently falling to the ground. If you are like me, you try to catch them as they fall around you. Swirling in the wind, the leaves are more tricky to catch than you might think. But what to do when you do catch one? I just put it in my pocket for a while and then eventually I pull it out and let it fall to the ground further away then it would normally have done.
It's the school season and my walk coincided with the school buses coming through and dropping off their kids. So at every bus stop, there was this cluster of idling mini-vans and SUVs idling on the side of the road waiting for the big yellow bus. It seems that no child is allowed these days to get off the bus and walk into their homes on their own two feet. No! Instead, they must be immediately herded into another motor vehicle and whisked off to some planned activity (i.e. karate practice, music lesson, etc.) or delivered to the very door of their home, which might only be a half a block away.
I have actually seen parents literally drive to the end of their driveway in order to retrieve their child off the bus. Then they will back right into the garage with their child. I kid you not.
Helicopter parents...I can go on. When I was a boy and in Little League, I think my parents went to maybe 2 or 3 actual games. Otherwise, I was on my own. Practice was entirely on me. I'd ride my bike to and from the practices with my baseball glove hanging off the handlebars. These days, every Little League practice is accompanied by parents in lawn chairs who have coolers of cold drinks and snacks at the ready for their child. Yes, during practice, many of the players will run over to their parents for a few sips of soda or some sort of snack to tide them over. And there is NOTHING the coach can do about it.
If I had run off the field in one of my Little League practices, my coach would have kicked me off the team and told me to come back when I was ready to take playing ball seriously.
But I digress. Back to fall. This is when the bees and yellow jackets get especially aggressive. I try to sit on my patio taking in the cool breezes and foliage but these bees are everywhere, climbing on my glass of beer or trying to get into my bowl of peanuts. I've been stung three times over the past five years, always in the fall. Never in summer, when bees are more docile and tend to mind their own business.
Finally, not sure if there is a thread already posted here regarding some fluffy-haired, effeminate news-reader named Shepard Smith, who apparently quit FoxNews earlier today. Anyway, I don't have cable TV anymore so it don't matter much to me but this might be a big deal for others so thought I'd get the word out. Good day.
Shep Smith is living proof of all that is wrong with Toxic Femininity and the corrosive effects on all that come in contact with it.
Probably not liberal enough and not enough of a Trump hater.
What’d you decide about the fruit fly in the wine?
Let’s just hope his replacement isn’t worse than him.
Still, great news. I know Fox News doesn’t get much love here lately but Hannity, Ingraham, and Carlson still make for a heckuva evening lineup.
I decided to just go ahead and ingest the fruit fly going forward.
When I was a kid we had a two mile walk down the hill to the bus and 2 miles back up in the afternoon. We did get a ride when it was raining.
Are you sure?? Seems unlikely that sucky Shep wouldve just up and left.
Ill try to verify this news.
This right here is why I love FreeRepublic.
That’s what I would have done. That way, any wine the fly might have drunk wouldn’t be wasted...
Shep gone? That’s the first I heard of that. Are you sure it is not fake news?
8 previous posts, but given the subject matter it bears repeating. (Feels like winning!)
Years ago...nay, decades ago...we walked to school. How far was it? A few miles. Junior High was the longest distance. Elementary school wasn’t so bad. I sort of miss those yellow slickers with the matching hood. The front piece was never quite right, so the rain would somehow drip all over the face.
I liked the fastenings of the yellow slickers. They were a latch, not a button or zipper. It felt more secure...being all latched in, with yellow slicker and black rubber boots.
During recess us boys would go down to the lower playground which of course was forbidden on rainy days because the drains always clogged and the water was deep. So our goal was to wade out into the newly formed lake and see how far one could get before the water would crest over the boot and fill the inside...Of course there were several times I would have wet pants and socks for the rest of the day. It was a price to pay for going into the “forbidden” lake. Wew weren’t punished as the wet socks was punishment enough.
Middle aged gay men love divas. Good chance Shep joins the Warren campaign. Drudge is also enthralled with Warren.
Rumor has it that he is co-authoring a book titled “Dear Diary” with CNN’s Jim Acosta.
If Jim leaves CNN soon, you’ll know it’s true. /Sarc
So long, butthead.
His replacement will be worse. Probably Donna.
