Sound’s like you might find Dr. Michael Heiser to be very interesting. http://drmsh.com/

Also, this is worth a read:

re: “Sound’s like you might find ...”

Now, I was asking you ... and I’m getting indications you don’t have an easy answer at hand.

I want to hear the concise answer that someone favorable to Luther would supply.

The byos were going to use a sponge mop to clean the inside of the refrigerator. How have they survived this long?

I’m not all that favorable to Luther.

Luther wasn’t the only one translating the Bible into their own languages. There were others.

One thing I find interesting is that though our modern English Old Testaments are usually translated from the Masoretic text, the original Greek NT translations, when quoting the OT, are often word for word copies of the Septuagint.

There is a lot of interesting background to our modern bibles that sometimes makes it hard to read them and take them at what they say without studying the actual source material.

It’s kinda interesting that a surprising number of Christians in the US believe that before the reformation all there was was the Catholic church. It was always one of many.

You missed the point. I won’t elaborate. Go back and re-read prev posts.

Funny you mention that. The ethiopian church has a very interesting “canon” compared to most western churches. One inclusion I find especially interesing is 1 Enoch. It goes into great detail about Genesis 6:1, and is something the writers of the NT were quite familiar with. It’s even quoted in Jude, 2 Peter and John.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-canonical_books_referenced_in_the_Bible

Thanks to the internet, we are all being exposed to bible history and understanding the likes of which Luther could only imagine.

I admire Luther for giving the Bible to the German people in their own language.

It is what the world wanted.

Whenever someone puts the contents of the actual canon within the reach of the average person, that is a very good thing.

I just picked up the entire works of Josephus. Looking forward to reading it for myself, rather than just what people say about it.

Or just what someone is telling you from the pulpit.

I’m especially sensitive to that one, since moving to the bible belt and joining a southern gospel band that plays at a lot of the smaller local churches.

The abount of unadulterated baloney I hear in some sermons is shocking. Down here, Christianity is almost more of a culture than a religious thing. And not really in the good way. $30 a month retirees preaching “from the gut” on Sunday morning - with people actually listening and believing - is what gets us some of the nutty beliefs that abound around here. I think that if I said that I didn’t believe the planet earth was created in six days they would ex-communicate me as a non-believer.

Who knows how long six days is to God. There are a lot of scriptures I don’t take literally. Like holy communion that bread is really jesus and that wine is really blood.
