Parent Arrested for Handing Cardboard with the word "Gun" printed on it to Teacher, Staff

The Village of Shorewood Hills is an upscale bedroom community on the shore of lake Mendota, surrounded by Madison, Wisconsin, Lake Mendota, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. On 23 February, 2018, Jonathan M. Fitzgerald showed some parental concern.

Jonathan, who is a 35 year old graduate student in a Ph.D program of molecular and cellular pharmacology, was buzzed into the school and calmly walked to his child's classroom. There he handed a piece of cardboard with the word "Gun" written on it to the teacher. From madison.com:
Shorewood Hills Police Chief Aaron Chapin said Jonathan M. Fitzgerald, 35, activated a front door buzzer at the school, 1105 Shorewood Blvd., around 10 a.m., requesting access to the building. When he was allowed in, he walked past the school office where visitors are required to check in, Chapin said.

A staff member followed Fitzgerald as he went down the hall to the classroom his child was in, Chapin said.

“Fitzgerald made statements to the teacher in the room about being an intruder who was allowed access to the school and gave the teacher a piece of cardboard with the word ‘gun’ on it,” Chapin said.

Chapin said Fitzgerald left the classroom and went to the administrative office where he made similar statements and handed staff another piece of cardboard with “gun” written on it, then left the school building.
The article at madison.com says the police understand that there was no threat to the school or public safety. The police arrested Fitzgerald on the "tentative charge of disorderly conduct".

Jonathan has been banned from the school district grounds.

It is obvious to most readers that Jonathan was demonstrating how easily an intruder could enter the school with a gun and access the children in a classroom. It was done in perhaps the least intrusive way possible to make a physical demonstration. Fitzgerald is cooperating with the police.

The authorities in the school district did not appreciate his demonstration showing the weakness of their security.

I hope the University of Wisconsin does not kick Mr. Fitzgerald out of the Ph.D program for showing such parental concern. The University is "gathering more information".

Hand them a sign that says “Phonics.” That would cause them to run screaming from the room.

Nobody is getting this, but what he does is prove what we say all along about violence.

It boils down to intent of the individual. A cop walks through the door with a gun. No one ducks for cover because of the gun. CCW holder comes in, you probably dont even know they have a gun. They may have walked in every day for years armed. No one is freaking out.

Intent.

The intent of gun free zones is to disarm aw abidng people so they cannot fight back with equal force, and to make the job of people with violent and murderous intent to have a much easier time and atmosphere in which to kill all the people you disarmed.

That is the intent of socialist libtards.

>>It is technically trespass. Visitors were required to sign in.<<

Disagree.

Once the person was buzzed in it is quite clearly an invitation to enter. There is no way for a person to know additional requirements unless told.

I think this was a great idea.

Something similar happened many years ago to a mainframe computer operations manager (Might be just lore). A DP auditor (we used to have such things) known to the computer operator was given access to the machine room. The auditor chatted up the operator and “accidentally” left his briefcase in the machine room.

When it was discovered a bit later, it had a note inside it with the word “boom!” written on it.

Ops manager, operator AND auditor were all immediately fired.

The day of the Sandy Hook thing, I had some business at a local high school.

My kids were home schooled so I was quite unfamiliar with any security measures they may have had.

I was surprised to be able to just walk in. I don’t remember, but I must have asked someone where the workshop area was that I was supposed to go to. No one gave me a second glance. I was somewhat surprised.

Chances are it’s no better.

Are they sure it said “gun”? Could it be it actually says “gub”?

I wonder if they would act the same if the parent wrote “knife” on the card, or “baseball bat”, or “ice pick”. All have been used as weapons to kill.

Can you image cave men arresting a parent for writing “rock” on a piece of paper?

We are truly in the world envisioned by George Orwell when he wrote “1984”. The Dems are so committed to enforcing “Thought Crime”, at the same time excusing actual violent acts by those with which they feel sympathy.

Yes, how long for the cops to respond to the gun free zone?

Should have walked in with a picture of a yak on it and spelled GUN. They come to arrest him say it was misspelled! it should be GNU.

They should be grateful.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Public schools are being run by imbeciles.

Get your kids out now if you want them to have a real education.

I've had conversations with school staff over several years, even was on a school board commission, and found they have zero interest in securing schools--rather study the issue. I love what this guy did, they should be thanking him. He proved his kid's school, his kid's classroom is unsecure. He not only was let in, he left afterward. Had he been a murderer, how many would have died in this gun free zone before police arrived?

More evidence that gun free zones should be eliminated, allow parents, teachers, and staff with CCW to carry on campus and at school events. If the school and police cannot keep the school secure, allow parents to organize and do so.

He may have done it for what he believed to be good reasons, but this action is basically an act of low-grade terrorism.

There are many non-threatening ways for him to have made the same point, yet he chose the one most likely to scare the hell out of everyone.

So they think the college was founded in slavery.

I can think of a well known bank that was started in the early part of the 20th century for the express purpose of laundering money for the Klan.

If you go back even a few generations there will always be skeletons that come up.

Gee, in Florida you can repeatedly tell authorities there is a crazy person that wants to shoot up a school and nada. But in Wisconsin, just the word on a cardboard box gets you arrested. Duly noted...
