It has long been a grave question whether any government, not too strong for the liberties of the people, can be strong enough to maintain its existence in great emergencies.
~ Lincoln
February 12 is the anniversary of the birth of the 16th - and arguably the greatest - president of these United States, Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). Born in Kentucky and raised in Illinois, Lincoln was largely self-educated and became a country lawyer in 1836, having been elected to the state legislature two years earlier. He had one term in the U.S. Congress (1847-1849) but failed (against Stephen A. Douglas) to gain election to the Senate in 1856. Nominated by the Republican party for the presidency in 1860, he prevailed against the divided Democrats, triggering the secession of the southern states and the beginning of the Civil War. As the course of the war turned more favorably for the preservation of the Union, Lincoln was elected to a second term in 1864, but was assassinated in April 1865, only a week after the final victory.

Couldn’t have been all that bad; they named a whiskey after the town he was born in.
Rebellion is what the South did in 1861-1865.
Without him, millions of American children would have been deprived of one of the best toys ever invented. Lincoln logs.
Separation is not rebellion. There was no intention of conquering or occupying the North,, ever. That is ridiculous, nobody then even thought that was possible or desirable..
Are you honestly wanting to go down that rabbit hole for another thousand posts yet again? Really?
In fact, Democrats have always been just what they are today -- they want powerful Federal Government to support their own interests and only suddenly discover the virtues of more limited government when they're voted out of office.
For an example of Democrats doing what Democrats do, consider this thread on Jefferson Davis' efforts to stop the Rock Island Railroad bridge over the Mississippi.
Davis wanted a Southern transcontinental railroad route, and so used his powers as Secretary of War to block the Northern bridge.
Yes, I remember too. Infuriates me that MLK hass a day to himself while our greatest have to share a day among themselves.
IMO Lincoln was NOT our greatest president.
The death of states rights and the birth of the draconian fedgov.

Exactly!
I agree.
I’m in the middle of Michael Burlingames excellent two volume Abraham Lincoln: A Life.
I cannot recommend it highly enough. Certainly the best bio available for Lincoln.
Fedeal Pavement is what we get out here in the hinterlands of western MD because we don’t matter as much as the liberal scum who surround DC.
[our potholes can swallow Smart cars]
That's all just a game of hidden word definitions.
By "the North" central_va means just the free-states, but not their Southern territories (i.e., New Mexico, Oklahoma) or Border States which remained in the Union (i.e., Kentucky, Missouri).
All those were claimed & fought for by Confederates, even though they had no conceivably lawful right.
And Jefferson Davis had plans on even mid-western free-states like Illinois, which could be pressured to support the Confederacy if its access to New Orleans port was blocked.
Finally, Confederates expected Washington, DC, itself to be abandoned, since it would be surrounded by Confederate states.
Of course, central_va wishes to minimize the existential threat Confederates represented to the United States.
But nobody at the time believed that, nor do many today.
You don't think George Washington deserves a holiday in his honor?
Because rebellion worked so well the last time?

The North is no longer the Industrial Center and the South is no longer the Agricultural center of the country, depending on “slave” labor.
Lincoln couldn’t afford to lose the enormous income of the South’s Tariffs. That was his greatest concern and he expressed it. The E.P. was his “Excuse” and not his reason for waging war.
Interesting assortment of non sequiturs you have there.
Washington’s Birthday was and is February 22nd. Period!
Phony gov’t meddling won’t change it except for the uneducated.
Interesting that you put slave in quotes. Why?
Lincoln couldnt afford to lose the enormous income of the Souths Tariffs. That was his greatest concern and he expressed it. The E.P. was his Excuse and not his reason for waging war.
So revisionist history would have us believe. But rather than reinvent the wheel, perhaps my learned friend BroJoeK can point you to some past discussions that showed just how nonsensical your claims are. I'm a big believer in recycling.
