Which was disappointing enough - on the face of it its patriotic! LOL
I know what you mean about love/hate relation with songs. American Woman here is the prime example - we had posts complaining about it, but the music is what counts, and it won big time. I know its about how horrible we Americans are (and how jealous Canadians are), but its still pretty good sounding, at least compared to the competition.
Yes, "Philadelphia Freedom" does refer to the name of Billie Jean King's tennis team, "The Philadelphia Freedoms," but the meaning of it goes beyond that to the deeper issue of the homosexual and feminist movements, in which Elton John and Billie Jean King are neck-deep. As much as you can trust Wikipedia (yeah, I know), the entry for that song gives a bit of an explanation of its meaning. The one thing the song is NOT about is American patriotism.
And, yep! "American Woman," same bunk, but a good rock song on its surface.
I don’t know what you’re up to there, Bob, but too late for the main Round 2 survey.
We’re now only trying to break the tie on “Philadelphia Freedom” vs. “My Eyes Adored You”!
Please pick from those 2 if you wish.
My eyes Adored You
Been Takin' Care of Business hence my absence. (Now THERE was a tune!)
TOURNAMENT OF CHART-TOPPERS 1970S PING LIST
(This is a temporary ping list, so dont worry!)
RUN-OFF FROM ROUND 2 RESULTS:
“MY EYES ADORED YOU” WINS! Beats “Philadelphia Freedom”.
Thanks to all who helped break the tie!
Now Round 3.
Interesting tidbits on the survey:
-MOST VOTES - tie of “American Pie” and “Stayin’ Alive”
-FEWEST VOTES - “Disco Lady”!
-ALL songs got some votes; no zeroes
-3 pairs were constantly neck&neck to the wire (some racing lingo here hee hee), including of course the pair for the run-off
bttt
No way, “My Eyes Adored You”. It’s a Mafia fix - Frankie Valli, New Jersey versus Philadelphia.
Call Jimmy Hoffa; call Andrew Cuomo and his “family”; call Father Quido Sarducci. Tell them to back off!
Now if it were “Oh What A Night”, I could see that.
However, Elton John would counter with “House at the End of the Street”, “The Bitch is Back” (the official Hillary Clinton campaign song for 2020), and “Jump Into Christmas”.
No contest. Elton’s the “Man”, or something like that. At least the Best Dressed Man. Valli looks like he parks cars at a ball game or works for an undertaker.
Protest! Trump didn’t win! Bernie got cheated! Michele’s not really a Moose! Protest! Protest!
