These weapons will never be on our streets unlawfully in the hands of criminals, said Sheriff Jim McDonnell as the guns were melted at a Rancho Cucamonga steel mill.
The guns, collected across Los Angeles County by 14 different departments included 2,778 from the LASD and 2,193 from outside agencies. Among the total destroyed in the 24th annual event were 3,520 pistols and revolvers as well as 1,451 rifles and shotguns.
The collection of weapons here today can be credited to the solid efforts of law enforcement officers throughout Los Angeles County, McDonnell said. They will not be used to commit a crime or used to harm our residents.

So, just as a point of departure, let’s just say that each gun weighed 15 lbs which is absurd. Of course that would be ridiculous for a pistol which tend to be about 2-3 lbs; a 1911 Colt is about 2.5 lbs and that’s on the heavier side. An M1 weighs just about 10 lbs which to me is unbelievable, they feel like they weigh 35 pounds!
So they got 4971 call it 5000 guns, let’s whack that back to 4500 to subtract for wooden stocks. That’s 67,500 lbs of steel. Worth about 2 cents a pound, let’s call it 5 cents a pound. That’d be $3375 which is solidly double what the real yield is.
There should be little or no question that at least ten cops were employed to perform this munificent task. There are 7 in the picture. Cost? $200 a day? That would be very low, probably more like $350 with admin and taxes and car expenses driving their asses out there and probably a $500 truck rental to drive the stuff out to the scrapper.
They spent minimally $2.5K to do this and probably recovered $1500. They sold 4970 guns and I’m certainly prepared to say that 4000 of them were garbage, but they managed to lose $1000 selling at minimum 500 guns worth $400 each which is $200K.
Sounds nice, but how many guns were co-opted by those in power who considered some of the weapons valuable or collector worthy, or just too high quality to destroy?
Liberal “Cash for Clunkers” mentality.
Death or destruction is always the first “solution” proposed.
I count 20 officers that could be out actually doing something to stop criminals, instead of staring at a pile of weapons that was as likely to be used in a crime before, than they are after they are melted down.
What will they do if some of the “melted down” metal ends up being made into bullets or another gun? Oh snap.
If they really want to take a bite out of crime, they should donate the rebar to our southern border wall construction.
That description cracked me up “it escaped and went on a killing spree”.
Now I’ve got a picture of a 25-cal gun running around on tiny legs trying to rob a liquor store.
Thats what Nazis do....they confiscate and destroy firearms. ............................. Ahhhh, but Uncle Joe took the guns and killed the whole family.
“Well, certainly there arent many serviceable guns in that pile but many of the antique guns could be sold for parts for big bucks”
I wonder how many collectibles there were? Looks like those idiots are doing a circle jerk they are so excited. Reminds of the photos of the Australian gun confiscation scenes. Same people...democrats...who got off on the destruction of vintage corvettes, mustangs, muscle cars etc during Obama’s cash for clunkers outrage. Filhy bastards.
Sure, I mean there was nothing else that could be done with them, right?
I wonder how much this ‘rebar’ cost the public...?
But the liberal's feel good about themselves factor was immeasurable.
The good ones go to police officer’s private collections.
As Dr ‘Quincy (QUINCY M.E., Jack Klugman) also declared, when a pistol was bought, escaped and also went on a killing spree, “WE’VE GOT TO STOP ‘IT’ BEFORE ‘IT’ KILLS AGAIN!”
So many silly anti-handgun scripts back then(Rifles were OK at that time) it is hard to keep track.
What a joke!!! From what I see in photo are mostly long rifles and pump action shotguns!... Not too many gang bangers using bolt action rifles.
Good, who wants to run over them?
Sharpened rebar is a deadly weapon.
What a waste.
“I think they could have melted down 4,971 gang members into Elmer’s Glue and made a lot more progress toward their stated goal.”
I laughed. But then I thought... that is what we should actually do....
