President-elect Donald Trump, who spent the weekend engaged in a war of words with civil rights activist and U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), met Monday with Martin Luther King III to discuss voting rights.
The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.s eldest son walked into Trump Tower at 12:51 p.m. with a handful of colleagues affiliated with the Drum Major Institute, a progressive public policy think tank where he is president.
Today, President-elect Trump is going to sit down with Martin Luther King III and others in New York and have a conversation about voting, about bringing more people into the system, the legacy of Dr. King and how we can continue to pursue that under the Trump administration, Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said on NBCs Today show Monday.
The private session at Trump Tower with civil rights advocates, on the same day the nation is honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.s birthday, represents a mix of symbolism and substance. King III has campaigned for years to establish a form of free government photo identification that could make it easier for Americans who lack a drivers license or other official ID to cast ballots. He and the other attendees, including the Rev. James A. Forbes, have urged Trump to endorse the idea of making such identification free.

Mr. President-elect Trump:
When you met with him, ask for ID.
That's how the worst laws seem to start.
They make promises to get them passed. Then they reneg on the promises.
“King III has campaigned for years to establish a form of free government photo identification that could make it easier for Americans who lack a drivers license or other official ID to cast ballots.”
Sure. To cast ballots for Dummycrats. Why is Trump meeting with this chump?
Discuss voting rights?! For whom? Sounds like a waste of time except Trump is talking with him in general.
What’s to discuss about voting rights, except requiring photo ID? How may white guys should he discuss this issue with?
It seems demeaning to me.
Because it’s MLK’s birthday holiday, because it deflects from the John Lewis flap and makes Lewis look bad, because it’s politically astute of Trump to do so, that’s why. Think.
King III is an advocate for photo ID voting. Isn't that what we've been asking for?
Democrats don't want to show any ID whatsoever, free or not.
Good. Trump will figure out how to make ID’s available to American Citizens in a way that the courts will find it hard to object, and then we can insist on Voter ID.
And if he’s talked to groups like this before hand, then he has had an opportunity to listen to their concerns, and he can use them to help confront the knee jerks who will assume the worst in any scenario.
Trump will not be stopped. Trump Train will roll for 4 days and then 8 more years.
> establish a form of free government photo identification
It already exists.
My real concern is that Civil Rights Icon and Hero John Lewis must be outraged (again) at MLK3's meeting with Trump. /sarc
True, and exactly right.
Politics is addition.
Most do, including most of the controversial ones like CA.
The problem is the execution, misuse or non-use.
It is politically astute.
There are factions among black activists.
Divide et impera
Why?
Are there problems with voting rights in the US?
Aside from vote fraud on the part of the Democrats?
Voter ID laws will reduce the disenfranchised voters both white and black and purple who are Americans. When illegals vote it destroys every American citizens rights. If it also limits voter fraud in minority districts then even better.
“King III is an advocate for photo ID voting. Isn’t that what we’ve been asking for?”
Ditto.
What a stupid thing to talk about. Everyone has the right to vote, except illegals and felons and Democrats want to give it to them.
“King III is an advocate for photo ID voting. Isn’t that what we’ve been asking for?
Democrats don’t want to show any ID whatsoever, free or not.”
Can you imagine the uproar if Trump proposed a complete overhaul of the voter registration system? Give everyone a new Voter ID card, with their photo on it, as a way to ensure access to the polls, while cleaning up the voter rolls at the same time? If he was offering to give everyone a free ID card, how could they then object to having to re-register, in order to prove who they are before getting their card?
