You Need to See This Tribute to the Victims of Michael Vicks Dog Fighting Ring By Diana Beth Miller - May 23, 2016
Dog fighting has been around for decades. We once may have thought of this practice as one of those faraway, unmentionable sports that takes place in the dark recesses of abandoned buildings with less-than-stellar characters at the helm.
But, when news broke of an American football quarterback, Michael Vicks, horrendous practice of dog fighting within the confines of his luxury home and property, people were not only shocked and stunned, but also extremely angry that this high-profile person would stoop to such disgraceful acts.
But perhaps more disheartening, is the petty punishment that followed this lengthy legal battle. Unfortunately, despite the outcry of enraged animal activists, Vicks punishment did not fit the crime. According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, Vick was found guilty of beating, torturing, neglecting, killing and using dogs for the act of dog fighting for profit (among other charges).
For this heinous crime, Vick did some jail time (19 months), but upon his release has since been hired onto another pro football team and has also acquired another dog. I can only imagine what terrible fate may await this poor innocent creature.
What happened to the dozens of dogs that were abused and mistreated at his aptly named, Bad Newz Kennels?
Some were rehabilitated and found new homes, some went on to do therapy work and the other unlucky furry souls had to be euthanized.
As sad as the situation was, at least his property-of-torture has been turned around for the greater good.
The luxurious house that once homed a diabolic man is now a place of healing with the Dogs Deserve Better Good Newz Rehab Center. This animal shelter and medical/health center is being used to help those animals in need and to give hope and health back to the many furry friends that enter through its doors.
Although, the foreboding sheds where these horrific practices once took place are still standing, they are now being used for storage or just left empty. The secluded area out back that once held chained, terrified dogs, has been stripped clean and is now covered with beautiful yellow flowers.
And the best part? Fifty-one freshly planted dogwood trees have been placed in memory and honor of those poor dogs that suffered at the hands of this criminal. Even though the restructuring of Vicks home and property, albeit a victorious step, is small in comparison to the hell these animals were put through, we as passionate animal activists still cry out in frustration.
When will the laws regarding animal cruelty, abuse, neglect and dog fighting become more fitting to the crime? We concerned citizens are doing our best to get these criminals stiffer penalties, but the fight is slow.
If you want to help put an end to animal abuse, be vigilant when you see abuse or neglect happening. Call your local ASPCA and report the crime. Together we can put an end to the torture of innocent animals at the hands of these despicable and heartless people
Exactly right.
Something like that is ingrained in their psyche since almost infancy. They start out burning ants with a magnifying glass and then progress to kittens, puppies, etc. Nobody can tell me that Vick watching those fights had any negative feelings about what he was doing. As was, as is.
“Dog fighting has been around for centuries.”
Bull-baiting was a blood sport in England involving the baiting of bulls, and on special occasions, even bears. It was believed that `baiting’ livestock made the meat more tender, so a lot of butchers owned `bulldogs’.
They were bred to be `weight-forward’ with massive chests & lean rear legs so they could not easily be thrown once they bit down on the bull, muscular withers, large heads with no `stop’ (you can put a ruler on some bulldogs’ forehead and the other end on his lower jaw—IOW, no nose) for the underbite needed to clamp onto the bull’s nose and force him to his knees.
Bull baiting was not finally outlawed until parliament passed the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1835.
Bulldogs were then bred with pugs in order to make them more manageable and then bred with terriers for the `sports’ of ratting, fighting badgers and other bull terriers.
The `American Pit bull’ is a terrier and the most maligned breed in America now, taking the most hated and feared status of the German Shepherd at the turn of the century, then the Doberman and most recently the Rottweiler.
It was once considered an ideal family pet. It was the model for the RCA Victrola ad showing a dog cocking his ear to listen. Helen Keller owned one. The original `Petey’ on the black-and-white `Little Rascals’ was an American Pit Bull terrier. Today the breed has been perverted by monsters like Michael Vick.

Pitting dogs against one another is illegal, as well as cruel and barbaric. Dallas and Atlantic City gave Vick the keys to their cities. His prison should have thrown away the key to his cell and kept him. In sum, Michael Vick and those like him who fight dogs are walking turds.
Those here who say, “Ban this breed!” are of the same mindset as the gun grabbers.
Surprised no one’s taken this bait: “Those here who say, Ban this breed! are of the same mindset as the gun grabbers.”
Didn’t mean to hijack or kill your thread.
Billy is just one of my seven boys and girls.
Billy is a Pit Bull, Billy is a massive 64 pounds of solid muscle, gristle, and bone.
Billy’s biggest problem is he believes he is a Lap Dog.
(he also thinks he has a right to lick your face off).
So has murder.......
Just the trailer has me bawling my eyes out. I can’t imagine what the documentary would do to me.
Yes, need box of tissues for sure.
If I were king, Vick would be stripped naked, covered with bacon grease, and put in a large pit.
Dozens of hungry dogs would then be let loose to feast.
The next day, his miserable remains would be hosed down a sewer hole.
I can’t believe the hate toward Vick on this thread..
He paid for his crimes...jail time and loss of a huge income...
Yeah, he’s a dirt bag...
But even dirt bags get a second chance...
My dog is on my lap right now sleeping away...I’d take a bullet for her...
