Hi, Folks! Please forgive the vanity, but I'm doing a "bucket list-type" trip in a couple of weeks to the 100th running of the Indy 500 on May 29. Looking forward to it,obviously!
I'm hoping knowledgeable Freepers might have some advice re: weather (seems fine, usually, on TV), mosquitoes, places to go - people to do, etc. Indy museum is on the agenda, of course.
I guess sun block will be in order but I'm particularly worried about skeeters 'cause they seem to come from miles around to feast on my flesh. My wife loves it that they leave her alone...
Anyway, any advice would be much appreciated and thank you in advance. If any of you are coming to Calgary I'll be happy to return the service.
cheers, Jim
agreed- 6 Buicks, 5 Chevrolets, 8 Fords, 3 Lolas, 9 Cosworths and a Partridge in a pear tree...
Take a rain coat! I’d take some sun screen too, but definitely a rain coat.
Squeezed from his own oranges IIRC.
Weren’t they trying to clean up the reputation of the infield at one time?
5) if you go to Carb day sit down low in turn 1 (Carb day is GA)...there is nothing like sitting there as cars come screaming at you 235MPH!!
yup “we grow oranges”....remember it well...also remember the exciting race when he beat little Al...
Do not get tickets and then get called in to work.
It’ll be a blast.
A good buddy lives there and goes every year and gets the full package. I always like hearing his blow by blow account. He used to attend the F1 races while that was going on too.
40 years is about right. The 500 used to be all about speed. They reached the point at which the cars are simply too fast for the track. Everything they’ve done since 1973 has been to limit speeds, so now it’s nothing more than open cockpit NASCAR.
no- they relish it...its referred to as the snake pit and they have a big concert there the Saturday before the race..
Always. We often had a better time going to time trials. Could have a nice picnic and enjoy the day with a better family atmosphere.
I'll agree with that. Also, turn it back into a man's race. Every time I see Danica Patrick I wanna hurl.
I’ve always been an AJ Foyt fan and was in my glory standing next to him in Gasoline Alley last year but the finish of the 1982 race was incredible as was the finish of the 2014 race:

"....Skeeter's...obviously,dress like your wife"
If you can get tickets on one of the many shuttle options, I'd consider it and plan on taking a long time to get back to your base camp.
Two really good stops on Main Street in Speedway are Daredevil Brewing and Big Woods Brewing. Big Woods has excellent food. There's also a little pub on Main called BBQ and Bourbon. They have great food and sell Daredevil Beer.
Definitely plan on going to the Speedway Museum. All the cars, including the Marmon Wasp, are still in running order. Pic below is Parnelli Jones driving the Marmon Wasp around the Speedway in 2011.
Smiley’s crash was so bad they actually found grey matter from his brain smudged on the track...
I liked it better when the engines crossed the finish line before the drivers. ;^)
Tonight we dine in Cincinnati!
