Scalia had a history of heart trouble, so while this comes as a surprise as he didn’t carry it on his shirt sleeve, it did come up one of his interviews over the past couple of years, wish I could remember which one.
And so, no, I do not believe there was any foul play. Scalia served his country with dignity & integrity & God saw to it that Scalia’s death should be with the same dignity & integrity. Shalom

Scalia’s philosophy of constitutional analysis is called Textualism, which he explains as interpreting the text based on what the words say and what was accepted at the time. For example, on the second amendment, there were limitations on the right to bear arms when the constitution was ratified, so those principles could be used in limiting 2nd amendment rights today. 7-29-12

The discussion drew upon illustrations from a wide array of sources and revealed how the selection of interpretive principles affects the resolution of ambiguity in the law.
There is a difference between originalism & textualism. Thomas is the true originalist, Scalia was the textualist. I have tickets to attend a Scalia lecture on March 9th that I have been looking forward to for the past 3 months & so this came as a rather big blow to me today. So, FYI, don't believe everything you hear in the media, let Scalia tell you himself who he is.
It would be difficult to add anything to the posted article and great posts above. Except, may I add: I’ve admired Scalia all of my adult life. He is irreplaceable and he is a Great American. His passing is a tremendous loss for our County.

That’s more than the Kenyan knows about him. The nimrod is clueless. Had to read off a handful of his accomplishments off a note card during his little speech earlier tonight.
They're both based on the meanings of the time they were written. Textualism only relies more on the interpretation of the actual words used. But the goal of both types of analysis is the same and ultimately still based on both word usage AND cultural analysis of the time.

Originalism includes the legislative record when determining the meaning of the text. Scalia did not believe in this, Thomas does.
and so while they both rely on the written text & the meanings of the words at the time they were adopted, originalism goes one step further in bringing the legislative record into that definition.
Thanks for that detail. It’s hard to unextended how the legislative record could be discarded for interpretation of the text, though, since it’s the most direct record of original intent.
