We the people have responded--to the disbelief and chagrin of the elites: "We love America, we think it is great, and you can take your global utopia and shove it where the sun don't shine!" God bless America!
Trumpâs no conservative anâ I donât care. Doo-da, doo-da. Trumpâs no conservative anâ I donât care. Oh de doo-dah day. Gonna run all night; gonna run all day. Trumpâs no conservative anâ I donât care. Votinâ Trump anyway.
To the tune of âCamptown Races/Ladies,â Stephen Foster (1826-1864) (Note: also works with âTrumpâs not a liberalâ¦.â)
Trump is a philosophically unmoored political opportunist who would trash the broad conservative ideological consensus within the GOP in favor of a free-floating populism with strong-man overtones.âThe Editors âNational Reviewâ
By successful, I assume you mean guided by conservative principles (Obama is a successful President by his own standards).
If Trump leads this country guided by conservative principles, I would be thrilled. Absolutely thrilled, and I would work very hard for his re-election.
What other GOP candidate has shown that’s a hill they were willing to die on?
As I understand his reasoning, he wants to keep people guessing. I just never thought having a politician -- because that's what he is now -- trying to keep voters guessing as to what he really means was something that would ever be worthy of support.
If you are not on board with him, that is fine. Enough of us are that Jake Tapper of CNN said he recognized early on that Trump will be the nomineeâand, imo, our next President.
Sure. If Trump is going to win in such a landslide that the votes of concerned conservatives in the general election aren't important, then I suppose there's no reason for him to address those concerns by folks like me who won't vote for him in the general election.
None of the candidates are perfect. I gravitated towards Trump because of his bold stance on immigration and free trade. He stuck his neck out (losing business from being called racist, etc) and I will stick out my neck in return.
“Trump is a philosophically unmoored political opportunist who would trash the broad conservative ideological consensus within the GOP in favor of a free-floating populism with strong-man overtones”
There you have it. History is replete with the commoner’s love for kings.
“Or you could vote for the 3 year neophyte senator”
Yes, I’ll support the 3 year Senator who actually stood on the Senate floor and called McConnell a liar to his face. The same one Schumer cries about being responsible for killing the Gang of 8 Amnesty bill. Yes, I’ll support the one person the establishment hates more than Donald Trump.
Right. As I said in my first post, I'm not a guy who believes in ideological purity. As of right now, I just have too many unanswered questions. Maybe if he wins the nomination, he'll be more clear during the general election.
So we let the primary process play out and see what happens.
Jeb B. Robot Rubio, Kasich the mailman’s son have all been declared conservatives. I sure do not want any of these types of conservatives in the White House. I would much rather have a pragmatist or somebody in the middle who protects our borders, stops influx of dangerous Muslims, and knows how to create jobs.
Trump is supposed to be the stand up, take no prisoners, tough guy- But in reality he's a deal maker who likes Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi, but who calls Ted Cruz a nasty person.
If Trump is admitting he's not conservative-We should be asking: What kind of "deals", to get exactly what kind of "things" done, will Trump be making with the Democrats?
That's not a question we have to ask about Ted Cruz.
We know he stands firmly on the conservative-small government side of issues.
I've been thinking "true conservatives" and libertarians have a lot in common.
So we let the primary process play out and see what happens.

To my mind, a constitutional lawyer like Cruz belongs in the Senate. The president can't legislate. Trump as an executive and Cruz as a senator would be the best outcome. One would pass the law and the other executes it. I am the first to call Cruz a brilliant lawyer. His actual foray into politics has actually dumbed-down Cruz.

The constitution and our Founding Fathers were deal makers. That original intent conservatives don't get that is hilarious to me. Also, some here think - because maybe they have no big deal experience - a deal is when each side gets 50/50. Sometimes the deal is skewed to benefit one side over the other. There will be deals the next president has to do - the constitution is designed to force you to make deals - but Trump can make the deal more favorable to his way of thinking.
Bloomberg is a great example of that.
If that's what being "sufficiently conservative" entails, no thank you.
Trump has a booze with his name on it. But claims he does not drink. WC Fields often repeated this accusation; Never trust a man who claims he never drinks.
I wholeheartedly agree.
I started off with that conclusion. I didn't want him in the race. I couldn't take him seriously. He has won me over a little at a time. "Halt all Muslim immigration" sealed the deal.
I am a single-issue voter this time around.
Let us not forget many of the worst leaders in history have been populist/nationalists which Trump has self admitted he is.
He has self-admitted, and I would like to see it, but my search skills are not that good... Thank you.
If you are willing to give up some principles to get some action then that's your prerogative.
