In Alabama, Trumps Wizard of Oz Act Leaves Some Fans Underwhelmed
QUIN HILLYER
Toto the dog wasnt needed in Mobile, Ala., Friday night to pull the curtain from behind The Great and Mighty Trump. Trump let his own curtain flutter open, showing to much of the audience the humbug within. In an hour-long verbal meanderthon at half-filled Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Trump allowed an atmosphere of electric excitement to dissipate, and then he split town without his promised post-show press conference.
As I left the stadium, a red-hatted lady of my acquaintance spotted me and pulled me aside, saying: Somebody needs to tell that man when to shut the you-know-what up. People were leaving in droves. Well, not entirely droves, but by my estimate, about 1520 percent of the 18,000 or so attendees Trump publicity organs had earlier said they expected up to 35,000 had filed out before Trump wound up his many-versed hymn to his own toughness and deal-making skills.
The line of the evening belonged to Rob Holbert, a former press aide to Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi and now the co-publisher of the port citys Lagniappe weekly. That speech was more disjointed, he said, than a skeleton after tumbling down four flights of stairs.

I know the tactics of the GOPe, they will keep the conservatives divided enough for their guy to sneak in with 30% of the vote.
The GOPe tactic is simply run enough phony conservatives like Hugabee and Santorum to keep the conservative vote divided.
No ping?
+1 to your comment. Thanks.
I missed one? Oh no! The world WILL come to an end in September!
The National Review has lost it. It is no more relevant now than the WSJ or the Weekly Standard.
That is .... OZSOME !
But what does it mean???
Hurry, Let’s Go Ask The Establishment ... They Will Know!
OZSOME !
The writer using the Oz movie in his Trump hit piece, is really entertaining.
I sat here in my home wondering if I had ever sat through a speech for President this early in a cycle before at any time in my life.
In my mind, the fact that it was televised was simply amazing.
Funny stuff.
Look at what disention has brought us, 8 years of sh## felt not only here but around the world. Whether he is a democrate posing as a republican or a republican that is not a true conservative we need to look at the big picture or we will be looking at bernie sanders
Sorry, I watched the same speech and saw no boredom or listlessness. Maybe you were watching a Jeb townhall.
Yeah, we've all been waiting for some word, direct or indirect, from Trent Lott so we can know what think about the Trump candidacy. And here is National Review, right on time, to provide us with the guidance we need. What would we do with NR?
No I wouldnt. Maybe you want to listen to rambling but many folks dont.
Speeches are to be of substance and not rambling. This guy is going to lose a lot of people if he doesnt stop the pointless howling.
He is going to lose people if he doesnt quit his pointless rambling.
And folks like you do not help.
The Mobile authorities stated the crowd was 30,000.
Hillyer is just another Trump hater who will tell any lie to put Trump down.
I'm not voting for anyone BUT Trump.
Eff the GOP-e.
>> Theo Bilbo, self-proclaimed as “The Man” was a midget in stature as well as mentally <<
Indeed. And not just that:
Bilbo wanted to shut down both Ole Miss and State, then move their students and faculty all to Jackson. At least you can’t say that about Trent Lott, no matter what his other shortcomings.
>> Much as I love Ted Cruz, as another poster stated up thread, he doesnt seem to inspire <<
A very astute observation, IMHO. Cruz may have the highest raw IQ of them all, and he probably could win a one-on-one oratorical contest with any candidate from either party.
In particular, I believe he’d be able to rip Hilary, Biden, Kerry or Algore to shreds in a Lincoln-Douglas-style debate.
But where’s the inspirational outlook of a natural-born leader? Where’s the happy warrior? Where is even the occasional heartfelt, genuine smile?
Maybe Cruz can hire somebody like a drama coach to bring him up to par in these critical areas. But I’d say he needs to hurry before the Trumpanado blows him offstage.
>> I read somewhere recently that a figure like 59% said theyd vote for him <<
I thought it was exactly the opposite. But if you’re correct and I’m wrong, so be it.
