In Alabama, Trumps Wizard of Oz Act Leaves Some Fans Underwhelmed
QUIN HILLYER
Toto the dog wasnt needed in Mobile, Ala., Friday night to pull the curtain from behind The Great and Mighty Trump. Trump let his own curtain flutter open, showing to much of the audience the humbug within. In an hour-long verbal meanderthon at half-filled Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Trump allowed an atmosphere of electric excitement to dissipate, and then he split town without his promised post-show press conference.
As I left the stadium, a red-hatted lady of my acquaintance spotted me and pulled me aside, saying: Somebody needs to tell that man when to shut the you-know-what up. People were leaving in droves. Well, not entirely droves, but by my estimate, about 1520 percent of the 18,000 or so attendees Trump publicity organs had earlier said they expected up to 35,000 had filed out before Trump wound up his many-versed hymn to his own toughness and deal-making skills.
The line of the evening belonged to Rob Holbert, a former press aide to Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi and now the co-publisher of the port citys Lagniappe weekly. That speech was more disjointed, he said, than a skeleton after tumbling down four flights of stairs.

Trent GOPee Lott? yuck, yuck, yuck. In both meanings......
Trump’s 25% among 17 candidates should not be exaggerated. Trump’s negatives are high. A majority of Republican says they would not vote for him. I think once the field of 17 is pared down, the most conservative and electable candidate, Ted Cruz will rise to the top.
Wow, too bad the GOP doesn’t fight like this against the Commies.
A former aide to Trent Lott didn’t like Donald Trump’s speech? Trent Lott? One of the biggest ***hole RINO’s to ever set foot in Washington?
It must have been a great speech, with 30,000 supporters, not “fans” in attendance.
If Trump goes, Bush wins.
In NASCAR terms I’d like to think Cruz is drafting the trump waiting it out, then passing,on the last.lap.
But. But. But.
Trent Lott was a wonderful cheerleader at Ole Miss. That is what they say when you mention that Trent Lott is as big a POS as Theo Bilbo ever was.
I like Cruz, but he doesn’t seem to inspire much passion. I’m not a Trump fan, but the GOP keeps trying to drive me into his camp.
I too hope that, after the bluster has died down, Ted Cruz will rise to the top as the premier constitutional conservative.
Seek and find stealth anti-Trump folks so you can write an opinion column. On quarter of the people leaving, and an intentional lowball number for the crowd does not pass the smell test. This is the only place I heard that.
The National Review sounds a lot like a jealous middle schooler, knowing they can’t measure up to someone more talented, they try to minimize the achievementof the winner. Unattractive in adults.
Exactly. I happen to like Trump but more so because the GOP elites don’t and are attacking their own voters.
Robert, who?????
Another irrelevant reporter that’s full of crap like the rest of em.
LEVEL FIVE HIT PIECE ALERT!!!! Take cover immediately and turn off all Jurassic media. Dangerous levels of lies and smears are expected!
“A majority of Republican says they would not vote for him. “
I read a poll that claimed 29% say they would never vote for him. That may have been just FLA though. If I weren’t so lazy I would look it up. Either way, there are many Republicans who would not support him at this time. He’s got some time to win them over, but I prefer Cruz too.
Hey, if this report IS accurate, then the hype may just be that—hype.
I wish there were some other reports there to know which are objective and which are the enthusiastic on different sides.
Those who love Trump will call this guy a RINO.
Those who are not in love with Trump will say “See?! See?!”
And others, most of us, will say “Who is right?”
Suuurrrrreee
Not according this analysis below that shows why Ted Cruz will move to the top when the others start to peel off.
