What we know so far about the pilot and co-pilot of Germanwings FL 4U9525; Update: French prosecutor says co-pilot intentionally destroyed the airplane Posted at 7:17 am on March 26, 2015 by Twitchy Staff

After last night’s bombshell report from the New York Times alleging that either the co-pilot or pilot had been locked out of the cockpit of Germanwings flight 4U9525 immediately prior to its crash, many on Twitter are asking about the identity and nationality of the co-pilot and pilot.

However Lufthansa, the parent company of Germanwings, won’t tell us. From the AP:

Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr described the pilots as “experienced and trained” in a press conference in Barcelona Wednesday night.

Lufthansa has refused to identify the pilots, or give details of ages and nationality, but it said the co-pilot joined Germanwings in September 2013, directly after training, and had flown 630 hours.

The captain had more than 6,000 hours of flying time and been Germanwings pilot since May 2014, having previously flown for Lufthansa and Condor, Lufthansa said.

But it looks like German media sources are reporting at least the first names of the pilots:

And Le Monde is reporting that it was the co-pilot who was locked out:

We’ll update this post as we learn more information.

Update. Here’s a video of the “cockpit door entry procedure” that explains how a pilot would be able to lock himself inside the cockpit:

Update 2. French prosecutors say co-pilot was at the controls:

Germanwings crash should now cause further investigation of MH370

New MH370 Report Reveals Radar, Procedural Failings
by Chris Pocock
- March 25, 2015, 2:23 PM

One year after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, a factual document issued by the Malaysian Ministry of Transport to fulfill its obligations under ICAO Annex 13 has shed new light on the partial primary radar traces obtained after MH370’s secondary surveillance radar mode ceased to function. It also exposed failings in communications and procedures at Kuala Lumpur (KUL) Area Control Centre (ACC) and Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Operations Control Center (OCC). The director-general of the country’s Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), Dato Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, elaborated on the findings with a long presentation during a conference at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) last week.

The contention that MH370 “turned back” over the South China Sea, crossed the Malaysian peninsula, turned again over Penang and headed over the Andaman Sea stems from the analysis of primary radar recordings from the ATC radars at the KUL ACC and at Kota Bahru on the east coast of Malaysia, as well as apparently the air defense radars operated by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) south of Kota Bahru at Jerteh, and on Penang Island off the west coast. However, the Annex 13 report does not identify the military radars, continuing a pattern of withholding sensitive defense information made evident during government briefings at the time of the disappearance. Four days after MH370 disappeared, it became evident that the RMAF air defense system had failed to identify and track MH370 in real time, causing authorities to limit the search to the South China Sea until then. The commander of the RMAF, Gen Rodzali Daud, has since been succeeded by Gen Roslan Saad.

Why would we not assume

There's also the possibility that the co-pilot may have simply passed out due to an unreported medical condition........

My thoughts for sure, but the tape only shows steady, normal breathing until impact.

I doubt this was an act of radical Islam considering such a large chunk of the passengers were Muslims.

I am leaning toward a 28 year-old spoiled, self-centered young man who could not handle the real world because he was raised like veal and protected from reality.

Surprising Study On Terrorism:

Al-Qaida Kills Eight Times More Muslims Than Non-Muslims

By Yassin Musharbash

Few would deny that Muslims too are victims of Islamist terror. But a new study by the Combating Terrorism Center in the US has shown that an overwhelming majority of al-Qaida victims are, in fact, co-religionists.

Do Lufthansa, or EU regulations require that when only one pilot is in the cabin, he dons his oxygen mask...in the event of sudden decompression. I believe that FAA regs require it for US airlines. Is there a mike inside the oxygen mask? If the co-pilot was wearing a mask...maybe that’s why we hear no sounds from him?

If there was eight minutes of horror, surely some of the passengers saw the pilot trying to get back in. Why would no one have pulled out their cell phones and started calling home to fill people in ? There must have been some phone calls with info?

Why would we not assume that the flight attendant called the pilot out, entered the cockpit and killed the other co-pilot and crashed the plane?

Uh, because it is considerably less plausible and less likely than what they are currently deducing based on available evidence? Apparently, the cockpit voice recorder was running the entire time (they have stated that the co-pilot or whomever was at the controls was silent the entire time). Had an attendant murdered the co-pilot in the cockpit, it seems likely there would be some evidence of that on the recording.

I can’t rule out terrorism connections because I don’t have enough information yet. Certainly, we’ve seen unknowns who turned out to be terrorists. I do believe that this guy has to be investigated, along with his ties, where he lives, who he associates with, before the notion of terror is dismissed.

Apparently, the person in the cockpit is capable of shutting down all cabin systems (wifi, or communications of any kind). So whether they tried to make calls or not (aside from the fact that there were probably no towers that were reachable), the calls probably didn’t go anywhere. Perhaps they’ll find some phones intact with unsent texts, but I doubt it.

I’m sorry, I don’t know the rules over there. If he had a mask on, he still could have answered.

They can hear his regular breathing throughout, and he had to manually initiate the descent, which he apparently did right after the pilot left the cockpit. Supposedly he said nothing else to the pilot, but he was definitely conscious and in control of the plane.
