Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul said the Republican Party has to embrace a message of optimism and look like the rest of America to win again.
If we want to win again, if we want to be a bigger party, not only do we have to be a party that looks like the rest of Americablack, white, brown, with tattoos, without tattoos, earrings, without earringswe have to look like the rest of America but we also have to have a party that has the message of optimism, said Paul in his keynote address at the American Principles Project gala on Wednesday evening.
When the GOP becomes the party of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and liberty, Republican ideas will win the day again, he said.
Paul suggested that Republicans should decide if they are going to go bold on fiscal issues or become Democrat light.

Im talking turnout not the leaders or representatives of the party.
The GOP isn’t going to win 50% of the Asian vote, 50% of the Latino vote, 50% of the black vote and 51% of the white vote.
When the GOP gets around 60,61,62,63% of the white vote they win.
Rand Paul’s statement doesn’t make any sense. Does the GOP lose Michigan if it doesnt look enough like Detroit?
...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.[Posted on 03/19/2013 7:04:07 AM PDT by Perdogg]
Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.
Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.
Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.
If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...
This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.
Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.
Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...[Posted on 04/21/2013 1:52:42 PM PDT by SoConPubbie]
The GOP isn’t going to win anyone’s vote if they put forth unprincipled candidates.
Worrying about race is something the left does.
Ya'll come!
Could republicans possibly get any more stupid ;/
These ****ing morons do not understand a damn thing.
I think he’s simply speaking a truth that few conservatives want to hear and even fewer have the courage to express.
Anybody here who knows me knows that I am no supporter of amnesty but I also recognize that there are millions who will get it. We’ve got 2nd and 3rd generation illegals here who simply aren’t going anywhere even if the Tea Party has super majorities in both house and senate plus holding the white house. This was the intent of kicking the can down the road for 30 years and its been successful whether we want to admit it or not.
At this point we need to be looking forward at how to get rid of the millions of more recent illegals, how we can keep them out, and how we draw the multi generation illegals to the right. I know it can be done if we have the will to do it.
Real power currently exists in the hand of the Community organizer from south side of Chicago and his henchman Holder.
How did he get that power? By welcoming diverse groups in their fold. It is majority of voters by summation of all minor groups.
There is a 3000 year old idiom in Sanskrit, which says to make friends you must not shut the front door in their face. If you are hospitable, there is infinitely greater chance you can win their hearts and minds. By shutting the door in their face there is zero chance of winning them over.
If republicans do not learn this basic lesson by 2016, get ready for more executive orders by Hillary, more late term abortions, more IRS Gestapo tactics, further weakening of Military, more appointments to Supreme court lasting 30 years each, higher taxes, expansion of Obamacare to strangle the middle class, and more control of our lives.
Conservatives can come in all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and colors. That said, it doesn’t appear to be what Senator Paul means. The legitimacy of conservatism is not based on who does or doesn’t accept it. Its legitimacy will be in whether or not it speaks truthfully and factually.
No, it’s not that simple.
Think about how the 2010 “shellacking” was achieved. And then think about how 2012 was lost. The former was not achieved by the “big tent” mentality.
Rand, if you oppose the Constitution, just say so.
I don’t have time for your go along to get along politics.
Have you ever studied human history in your life?
Some in Germany 1933 might accept the same doctrine.
Ron Paul is a man without principles. It’s been clear for some time that Rand Paul is also a man without principles.
???????????
The GOP does look like the rest of America except for the lack of blacks. Part of that is their fault, part of it is ours. Its their fault for drinking the Liberal Cool-Aide and viewing Obama as a Black man when in reality he is black AND white and RED all over. Its our fault for just writing them off in every election as a lost cause.
As for tattoos and earrings (aside from women) - that is part of America’s problem.
A woman with tattoos is making a statement - I’m just as good as a tough man - which she is not.
A guy covered with tattoos and metal jewelry dangling from his eyebrows, ears, and lips (women too) is ALSO making a statement - I don’t give a damn about your sensibilities or public opinion.
I wouldn’t hire any of them until they dressed like a civilized person instead of some savage barbarian.
This is the problem with Libertarians. They get carried away with tolerance to the point of idiocy.
Paul needs to decide the same on illegal immigration issues.
Ca$h > principles. Meet the new GOP same as the old DemocRat.
Won’t help them “win” either way. The GOP wins when they put principles over Mammon.
If I am right, 2014 will be nothing like 2010.
If you are right, 2014 will be repeat of 2010.
I hope you are right and I am wrong, but I am not so hopeful.
Please keep in mind, in fall of 2010 economy was much worse shape than today. Financial institutions are in much better shape in 2014 compared to 2010.
